The Office of Facilities Administration provides leadership and central staff expertise to the faculty, staff and executive leadership of the College of Veterinary Medicine in a manner that is proactive, customer-oriented and value-added. The Office of Facilities Administration seeks a self-motivated, professional, customer-focused, and team-oriented candidate who will serve as Material Handler to support the entire College of Veterinary Medicine in mail services.

As a Material Handler you will:

  • In a timely and professional manner, provide shipping, receiving, and mail sorting services for the entire College of Veterinary Medicine, which includes multiple departments and buildings (handling such goods as: cleaning supplies, office supplies and equipment, hospital supplies, chemicals, lab supplies and equipment, books, pet food, refrigerators, freezers, dead animals, animal parts, animal feces, samples, etc). Oversee high volume of day to day operations and monitor functions of college mail services including pick-up and delivery of Federal Express, United Parcel Service, and various other parcel vendors.
  • Receive, sort, and distribute inter-college, inter-campus, and United States Postal Service mail. Monitor mail pick-up and sign for express, registered, and certified USPS mail.
  • Order, cut, and prepare monthly billing for dry ice used by departments for shipping.
  • Make initial determination of whether a package or piece of mail looks suspicious based on established criteria provided by the United States Postal Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • Maintain college mail database and request mailbox user updates from departments on a regular basis (at least bi-annually).
  • Develop positive relationships with clientele including staff, faculty, and students, and consistently provide excellent customer service in all aspects of the position.
  • Independently resolve customer concerns by demonstrating strong decision making, conflict resolution, and problem solving skills with only the most difficult and sensitive cases elevating to the supervisor.
  • Apply strong priority setting and time management skills to constantly aim for efficiency and accuracy in all duties.
  • Required Qualifications:

  • HS Diploma with 4-5 years providing customer service, handling mail and/or packages, or experience in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to successfully perform in a team environment, as well as foster positive relationships with an array of clientele, providing excellent customer service and demonstrating a professional demeanor.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, decision making, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Possess strong priority setting and time management skills.
  • Must be able to handle several competing priorities in a demanding office environment with a high level of customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with very general supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate materials received and to prioritize and make independent decisions in order to receive goods accurately.
  • Ability to express thoughts clearly both orally and written.
  • Proficient information technology skills required (i.e. email, data entry, electronic calendar technology).
  • Must be able to lift more than 50 lbs.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Information technology skills, specifically with databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Familiarity with Cornell policies and procedures.
  • Prior Mailroom experience and knowledge of USPS, UPS, FedEx processes and procedures.
