  • At the Institute of Bioelectronics (IBI-3) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, physicists, chemists, biologists, and engineers perform joint research on the scientific principles of the functional link between biological components and electronic components. This collaboration has led to the development of platforms for microfluidics, micro- and nano-patterning, electronic biosensors, and neural implants. These technologies are not only developed to understand biological processes, but also pave the way for their application in sensor technology and diagnostics.

    We offer you an exciting

Master Thesis: Development and characterization of an electrochemical

    biosensor using flexible multielectrode arrays

    Your Job:

We aim to develop an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of target proteins in medical diseases. The biosensor principle should be fabricated and optimized on flexible substrate multielectrode arrays (flex-MEA). This fabrication aims to generate a Point-of-care (PoC) biosensor device.

    Your tasks in detail are:

  • Test different electrode designs to define the one that fits the best as a PoC biosensor test

  • Test and establish different immobilization techniques, and optimize and characterize the fabrication in terms of target detection using electrochemical techniques, such as impedance spectroscopy, voltammetry, and/or chronoamperometry

  • Confirm the parallel optimization and characterization with other physicochemical techniques like quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM)

  • Your Profile:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in biomedical/electrical engineering, physics or similar

  • Desirable experience with electrochemistry

  • Willingness to familiarize yourself with new methods

  • Ability to communicate with scientists and technicians from various disciplines

  • Well-structured and systematic research approach

  • High degree of independent and analytical working style

  • Passion for science

  • Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your master's degree:

  • Multifaceted work in an interdisciplinary and international setting, as well as a cooperative work environment

  • Fantastic research equipment facilities

  • The chance to independently prepare and work on your tasks

  • Ideal conditions for gaining practical experience alongside your studies

  • Forschungszentrum Jülich located close to the interface between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany and with strong links to the ABCD Region (Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf) which is one of the leading high- tech regions in Europe
