  • While it is currently not feasible to fully restore vision, the development of visual prostheses that stimulate the retina electrically has enabled significant, still rudimentary progress towards the recovery of useful vision in patients with severe degenerative retinal diseases caused by photo-receptor death. Aiming a new generation of visual prostheses, penetrating neural implants for the retina containing multiple electrode sites are used at the Institute of Biological Information Processing (IBI-3) - Bioelectronics to enable simultaneous recording and stimulation of retinal activity. In this project, different electrical stimulation parameters and strategies will be explored to increase the efficiency of electrically evoked potentials in the retina towards vision restoration.

    Your Job:

  • Perform retinal electrophysiology experiments

  • Explore different intraretinal electrical stimulation strategies (voltage-controlled vs. current-controlled)

  • Investigate and characterize intraretinal electrical stimulation parameters

  • Perform data processing using programming languages such as Matlab

    Your Profile:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in biomedical/electrical engineering, biology, physics, or related field

  • Ability to communicate with scientists and technicians from various disciplines

  • Well-structured and systematic research approach

  • Passion for science

  • Advantageous, yet not mandatory, is knowledge in electrophysiology and programming

  • Interest in the field of Bioelectronics and Neuroscience
