Job Description


The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Master's degree in History or a related area with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in History from an accredited institution;
  • Proven knowledge of and experience in teaching American History and World History;
  • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written;
  • Ability to recognize and to respond to the individual differences of students from a culturally diverse student population;
  • Willingness to make students active partners in the teaching/learning process;
  • Ability to communicate the concepts and theories of history in practical ways;
  • Computer literacy and experience using computers in the classroom with a willingness to apply technology and innovative approaches to the teaching of History;
  • Meet the appropriate credentialing requirements for the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools (SACS).
  • The following degree and experience is preferred:
  • Doctorate in History from an accredited institution;
  • Two to five (2-5) years of teaching experience in a college or in another post-secondary institution;
  • Experience in distance learning instruction;
  • Research and/or publication useful to classroom instruction.

    The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing, instructing, and grading all class coursework;
  • Assigning final grades;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Serving the community;
  • Serving effectively on college committees.

    The specific duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Duties and responsibilities associated with teaching a minimum of 36 semester hours annually;
  • Preparing a syllabus for each course;
  • Instructing assigned classes;
  • Grading all quizzes, tests, and written assignments;
  • Assigning final grades and delivering grades and grade justification sheets personally to the IRSC main campus;
  • Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students;
  • Cooperating in Departmental budget preparation and in course planning and development;
  • Appropriately integrating computer software and technology-based instruction;
  • Maintaining a safe and effective classroom environment;
  • Participating in department, division, and general faculty meetings, applicable college committee activities, and other forms of college service;
  • Assisting with Departmental projects and programs;
  • Serving on at least one College committee;
  • Completing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    This position requires an ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present verbal lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, reach up, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. It also requires manual dexterity to operate standard office machines, such as, copier, fax, calculator, telephone, and other equipment as necessary. IRSC expects its employees to follow proper safety standards while employed by the College.
