Vacancy Overview

Permanent position, 36.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE).

The University is looking for an enthusiastic market researcher with excellent analytical skills to deliver the longitudinal aspects of the annual market research and insight plan. With strong knowledge of best practice in the delivery of market research, you will work across a broad portfolio of work, including staff, student and customer insight, supporting the needs of the Market Research Managers.

Using your excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to manage and motivate, you will ensure quality standards and create effective and efficient ways of working in your team, to deliver insightful survey analysis. To be considered for this role you will need experience of working in market research and/or insight. Job Description


To generate and co-ordinate market research and insight to inform decision making across MCI and the wider university. Works across a portfolio of insight that covers Prospective Students, Staff and Student Experience, Brand and Commercial.


1. Responsible for the delivery of an annual market research and insight plan, working with key contacts across the university to develop insight methodologies and deliver insight to agreed objectives.

2. Designs and delivers market research projects using a variety of methodologies, that meet objectives and deliver actionable recommendations. Includes survey design, focus group design and moderation, and results analysis.

3. Tests new and existing products, services, and marketing communications to ensure they are optimised to meet market demands, and uses insight to inform marketing planning for best return on investment.

4. Analyses data from various feedback mechanisms and secondary sources to deliver insight.

5. Creates and maintains market research best practice and quality standards and champions an insight-led approach.

6. Works with contacts across MCI to ensure survey and focus group recruitment is carried out in line with best practice.

7. Works with communications leads to ensure audiences are aware of decisions that the university has taken in line with their feedback, to close the feedback loop.

The Person Specification focuses on the knowledge, skills, experience and qualifications required to undertake the role effectively. This is measured by (a) Application Form, (b) Test/Exercise, (c) Interview, (d) Presentation.

Essential Criteria 1

Good honours degree or equivalent qualification/ experience. (a)

Extensive experience of using both quantitative and qualitative research methods and undertaking analysis of that research to answer questions about market demand and customer/stakeholder insight within a business or university context. (a,c)

Essential Criteria 3

Knowledge and experience of market research methodologies and relative strengths and weaknesses depending on objectives. (a,c)

Essential Criteria 4

A good problem solver with the ability to identify gaps in knowledge and identify how those gaps can be filled through the generation of market research and/or customer/stakeholder insight. (a,c)

Essential Criteria 5

Highly analytical and numerate with a strong grasp of data analysis. (a,b,c)

A high level of written and oral communication skills. (a,c)

Essential Criteria 7

Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work constructively and effectively with colleagues. (a,c)

Desirable Criteria 1

Market Research Society qualification such as the advanced certificate/ diploma, or similar, or willingness to work towards. (a)

Demonstrable experience of using insight to generate recommendations and business enhancement/ improvement. (a,b,c)

Knowledge of how market research supports and drives marketing more broadly. (a,c)
