  • The Manager, Sensing Services for Digital Agriculture will be appointed until 30 June 2028, with the possibility of an extension.
  • Whilst employed by the University of Adelaide, the location of the role may be negotiated.

  • An outstanding opportunity exists for an experienced project manager with a service-oriented and collaborative team spirit to lead the establishment of novel digital sensing and field phenotyping infrastructure and services across the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF), a Commonwealth funded National Research Infrastructure network, comprised of partner nodes in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, the ACT, New South Wales and Queensland, to provide access to cutting-edge research infrastructure and expertise in plant phenomics in controlled environments and in the field.

    The Manager, Sensing Services for Digital Agriculture will be an experienced team leader and an exceptional communicator, able to unite APPF Nodes to develop and implement a strategy for all APPF field phenotyping services, including the rollout of APPF's new mobile phenotyping fleet, field sites and network of continental observation units.

    Reporting to the APPF CEO, the Manager, Sensing Services for Digital Agriculture will lead APPF's Field Phenotyping Expert Working Group and will work in close collaboration with APPF Nodes, National Head Office, research community, agriculture industry and other stakeholders ensuring APPF field phenotyping infrastructure and services deliver fit for purpose National Research Infrastructure to help researchers and industry tackle some of the biggest challenges for agriculture of our time.

    To be successful you will need:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in remote sensing, plant science, agricultural science, agricultural engineering, or in a senior project management / leadership role in a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of strategic projects and procedures.
  • Significant experience with image-based plant phenotyping, remote sensing of plants, or other image-based structure characterisation.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and leading a service-oriented interdisciplinary team to improve performance, establish a harmonious working environment and maintain an outcome-based focus.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with the research community and industry and understand their needs and drivers.
  • Ability to optimise the use of novel research infrastructure to maximise high-quality research output, undertaking of pilot studies and implementation of workflows.
  • High quality interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to effectively engage with internal and external collaborators and other stakeholders, including the delivery of presentations and reports to a range of audiences.
  • Providing state-of-the-art phenotyping tools and expertise

    Established in 2009, the APPF was developed with funding from the Australian Government under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to develop a globally collaborative plant phenomics capability that provides leadership in infrastructure, skills and service for agricultural research and industry to maximise the productivity in Australia's unique and variable environment. Confirmed Commonwealth funding and significant co- investments from other parties will underpin APPF's expansion and Strategic Plan 2023-2028.

    The APPF provides access to cutting-edge research infrastructure and expertise in plant phenomics to facilitate innovative research projects. The collaborative nature of the facility helps accelerate knowledge transfer, increases cross-disciplinary collaboration and promotes data sharing to help academic and commercial plant scientists understand the relate the performance of plants to their genetic make-up.

    The nodes of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility are strategically located across Australia's varying climate regions and leading research and development capabilities for grains, plant breeding, soil science, viticulture, horticulture and natural resource management.
