  • About the Role You will manage the finances of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Mathematical Analysis of Cellular Systems (MACSYS), the world's largest research initiative in mathematical biology. Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, and accounting, and provide vital financial support and guidance to the Centre's diverse stakeholders, contributing to groundbreaking scientific advancements in a multidisciplinary and international environment.

    Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing high-level accounting and budgeting services and advice to the Centre and Executive Board, including financial reporting on projects, salaries, and grant finances.
  • Managing budgets and consolidated reporting across the Centre, preparing monthly and quarterly financial statements, and monitoring expenditures against the budget.
  • Initiating and developing financial reports for analysis and strategic planning, managing accounts payable and receivable transactions, and ensuring compliance with financial protocols and regulations.
  • Serving as the main point of contact for financial matters with university and Participating Organisation staff, contributing to financial analysis of business cases, and providing data as requested by the Centre's leadership and the Australian Research Council.
  • Who We Are Looking For You will bring extensive experience in budget formulation, financial reporting, and data analysis, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ideally, you will also have experience in large, computerised accounting systems and a background in an academic/STEM environment, especially within the ARC Centre of Excellence or equivalent.

    You will also have:

  • A degree in a finance-related discipline and relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education/training.
  • Proficiency in formulating budgets, financial reports, data manipulation, financial analysis, and strategy development.
  • Strong technical skills in word processing, spreadsheets, share drives, and databases.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a commitment to quality service, self-motivation, and the ability to provide creative solutions to problems.

MACSYS brings together mathematical, computational, and biological scientists to generate the mathematics and computational technologies required to make biology predictive; establish mathematical whole cell models (WCMs) for in silico biology as a powerful complement to traditional in vivo and in vitro approaches; tackle fundamental biological problems; and establish a world- leading research and biotechnology translation environment. MACSYS will have a strong emphasis on equity and diversity in research, training, and outreach.

    The Centre is a significant international, multidisciplinary, and multi- institutional project. The Centre is headquartered at the University of Melbourne and operates at a Node at each of its 5 university partners and collaborates with 13 Partner Organisations from Australia and overseas. Over seven years, MACSYS will receive $35M of funding from the ARC, as well as over $9.2M of cash contributions and more than $37.1M of in-kind support from all Participating Organisations.
