  • Development of the 2-step synthesis protocol of this new electrocatalyst at the gram scale - Participation in the installation and start-up of the new electrochemical measurement equipment - Evaluation of the electrocatalytic properties of the catalyst in terms of repeatability and reproducibility - Study of the stability of the catalyst in solution over 60 days - Performance tests of the catalyst in an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer under basic conditions - Determination of the extrapolation factors to go from the production scale of 1 g to 100 g - Development of the operating conditions for the thermal treatment, second step of the synthesis process, thanks to a dedicated oven.

    The recruited candidate will have for mission to develop a synthesis protocol to produce up to 100 g of the reference catalyst and to evaluate its stability over 60 days in electrochemical conditions

    Although hydrogen is the most abundant gas in the universe, more than 95% of its production comes from fossil energies, with the corollary of significant carbon dioxide emissions. In order to move towards a low-carbon hydrogen, water electrolysis, which breaks down water into oxygen and hydrogen by applying an electric current between two electrodes, is the most attractive and virtuous solution. However, the industrial development of electrolyzers is hampered by their low energy efficiency due to a significant overvoltage at the anode. Although recent research has led to the development of catalysts capable of significantly reducing this overvoltage, the cost of producing hydrogen is still too high. Thanks to the internationally recognized know-how of our research team in the field of fluorinated materials, a new catalyst with outstanding performance has been discovered. It has led to a patent in 2021, a publication in a prestigious journal, 3 projects (Emergence in 2020, Samuel de Champlain in 2021, IEA 2021) and a prize from the Fondation d'Entreprise Grand Ouest in 2021. Given the degree of innovation, the CNRS has decided to support the development of this material in 2022 as part of a pre-maturation project.

    The engineer will join an IMMM team composed of 5 people with expertise in the field of fluorinated materials in terms of synthesis and characterization to carry out the various missions.

    Eligibility criteria

    The candidate, preferably confirmed, will have an engineering degree (Grandes Ecoles) or a PhD. He/she should have a strong knowledge in the field of materials synthesis and characterization. Skills in electrochemistry and/or in the scaling of syntheses will also be an asset. Scientific curiosity and a high level of rigor will also be selection criteria.
