Salary: £36,386 per annum Grade: Grade 7 Post Type: Full Time Contract Type: Fixed Term - 42 Months Release Date: Wednesday 14 September 2022 Closing Date: 23.59 hours BST on Sunday 09 October 2022 (unless otherwise stated) Reference: LSSJ-194-22

Kent Law School are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to carry out ground breaking research on the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project ‘The Future of Good Decisions: An Evolutionary Approach to Human-AI Government Administrative Decision-Making'.

Under the supervision of Dr Connal Parsley, the project will investigate how our ideas of 'good decisions' can evolve for the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where technology, human agents, information, system design and evaluation processes including judicial review are understood as part of an adapting ecology.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced researcher which will focus on integrating knowledge from across diverse fields of scholarship with legal theory and doctrine, and using pre-figurative participatory methods to model new decision design and evaluation principles; resulting in well-theorised potential decision-making practices with a robust normative underpinning.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of key milestones scheduled for years 1-4 of the project; seeking alternative conceptions of decisions and their quality, addressing the interaction of these conceptions with contemporary legal theory, and articulating the normative principles that ought to inform the design, execution and evaluation of administrative decisions.

We are offering this role on a full time, fixed term basis for a period of 3.5 years

As Postdoctoral Research Associate you will:

  • Plan, develop and undertake research on administrative decision-making in light of the advent of Automated Decision-Making.
  • Collaborate effectively in the organisation of events, the development of publications, and the collation and synthesis of relevant materials from international projects and contexts
  • Assist in the organisation of research meetings including workshops, Live Action Role Play events, project development meetings, advisory board meetings, reading groups, and dissemination events
  • Contribute effectively to academic publications of exceptional quality, to include co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals, a co-edited collection, industry-facing publications, and other agreed outputs including documentation associated with Live Action Role Play events
  • To be successful in this role you will have/be:

  • A PhD in law, the humanities or social sciences - awarded or close to completion (or equivalent experience)
  • Knowledge of qualitative approaches to research and previous experience of applying them
  • Relevant knowledge in at least one of the following fields:
  • Legal and political theory
  • Philosophy of technology and technosocial ecologies
  • Track record of research publications appropriate to career stage
  • Excellent research, communication and interpersonal skills
  • In return, we can offer you:

  • a friendly, open and collaborative working environment and support in your development and wellbeing
  • 43 days' leave per year (personal leave, bank holidays and additional days allocated for the Christmas period)
  • an excellent pension scheme with generous employer contributions
  • on-campus cinema/theatre, sports facilities, library, nursery and food outlets, set among green, open space overlooking the Cathedral
  • on-site parking
