Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join the Paediatric Respiratory team for 12 months in a locum consultant position to provide cover for maternity leave.

The tertiary paediatric respiratory service for the Wessex Region covers a population of 3.5 million. It provides inpatient and outpatient treatment for a full range of respiratory problems, for children of all ages. There is a 15-bedded inpatient PICU and a 6 bedded HDU alongside approximately 120 paediatric beds. In addition there are 2 beds at Naomi House hospice for children on long term ventilation awaiting care package provision. The Paediatric Respiratory Service works closely with all paediatric subspecialty and is supported by a comprehensive diagnostic radiology service and a physiology service.

The respiratory department is actively involved in a wide range of research activities particularly in relation to sleep disordered breathing, asthma and allergy, primary ciliary dyskinesia and cystic fibrosis

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


  • Responsibility for care of Paediatric patients with a full range of respiratory diagnoses
  • Weekly respiratory/sleep/long-term ventilation/cystic fibrosis clinics as outlined in job plan
  • 1 in 6 weekend ward rounds for respiratory inpatients
  • Participate in review of patients post ventilator titration nights and adjustment of ventilation prescription as necessary
  • Outreach clinics across network for children on long-term ventilation and/or cystic fibrosis dependent on the skills and interests of the successful applicant
  • Liaison with other hospitals in the region to provide specialist advice and to ensure children receive timely and appropriate treatment

    We are looking for someone who is on the specialist register in Paediatrics with subspecialty recognition in Respiratory Paediatrics (or equivalent) or be within six months of CCT date. The successful candidate will have knowledge, clinical and technical skills to provide a consultant led service in Respiratory Paediatrics


    Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

    The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
