Job Summary

Provides journeyman-level skills in the repair, resetting and installation of locking devices and the manufacture of keys. Locksmiths are responsible for repairing, rebuilding, and resetting locks and for cutting keys for locks in buildings, cabinets, and lockers. The Locksmith is responsible for installing, repairing, rekeying and master keying most door locks on campus. Must be able to pass an extensive police background check.Specific job requirements render the position security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Section 51.215 Texas Education Code.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain familiarity with the problems which arise in locksmithing work. Repair, alter and install locks, and keys of various types.
  • Use equipment, tools, and materials used in locksmith work. Diagnose locksmith problems likely to be encountered on the campus of UT Arlington.
  • Organize assigned locksmith work, analyze routine and emergency problems, and develop effective work methods.
  • Repair locks, padlocks, door locks, and key locks. Make and repair keys of various types and operate key machines. Set up and reset locks cylinders; rebuild and install locks; lube, repair, and check locks; make parts for locks and change lock combination by repining cores.
  • Requisition needed equipment, materials, and supplies, and see that these are properly safeguarded and recorded. Use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs and attend any required meetings.
  • Other functions as assigned.

    Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or (GED) and three (3) years of experience as a journeyman locksmith with comprehensive experience in the repair, rekey and installation of locks, and keys including knowledge of SFIC (Small Format Interchangeable Core.
  • Hold and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with no serious violations.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in computer skills, and the ability to use various Windows- based programs.
  • Read emails and respond, open and close Work Orders from a computer-based Work Order system.
  • Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.
  • Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate with students, faculty, staff, and the Administration.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in all phases of duties and responsibilities to be performed.
  • Working Conditions

    May work in all weather conditions and extreme temperatures. May work around chemicals and chemical fumes, standard office conditions, biohazards, and electrical and mechanical hazards. Use of manual dexterity and key cutter, climbing stairs and ladders, lifting and moving.
