Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Division of Facilities Management functions are to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service. This position requires a current NC locksmith license.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Primary purpose of the Facility Maintenance Building Trades- Lead Locksmith will aid the Facility Maintenance Supervisor (FMS) on all matters concerning the operational aspects of the Lock Shop. This position will work with a computer-based software in the design & layout of complex master key systems. This position will export codes to automated key cutters and CNC machines for the purpose of cutting and engraving keys. This position enters personal and department information into the facilities management database. Duties include but not limited to, master keying all cylinder types including desk and padlocks, duplicating & cutting keys, repairing and installing door, cabinet, and file cabinet locks.

Description of Work Continued:

40% Knowledge-Technical

  • Servicing and installing all door hardware, including closures, mortise, cylindrical locking hardware, and fire rated exit devices.
  • Understanding and knowledge of hardware manufacturer installation specifications and guidelines ·
  • Employee reviews work orders and determines priority when completing requested tasks · Orders parts and supplies and maintains inventory records. ·
  • Designs master key systems which include sub- master and single keys and maintains records
  • Understanding of NFPA 101 and NFPA 80 life safety and fire codes, and the ability to locate and research needed materials associated with job from vendor source.
  • Working knowledge in key bittings array for small format master keying, pinning of cores, ability to research and collect information pertaining to customer needs.
  • Disassembles locks such as padlocks, door locks, and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
  • Operates key-cutting machines.
  • Ability to apply and interpret technical knowledge to resolve unique or overly complex situations.
  • Ability to perform routine tasks completely and accurately.
  • Estimate cost of labor materials for work orders; obtain competitive prices for equipment and supplies needed for the department.
  • Ensure work orders are closed in a timely manner.
  • Utilize key cutting machines, drills, saws, buffers and grinders, key gauges, and locksmith tools.
  • Adds and updates data in the Key Tracking Software program used by the University
  • Assist in the installation of electronic and other special locking systems for university buildings and facilities; perform complex repairs and update records as required.
  • Open a locked door without a key.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • 30% Lead Worker

  • Serves as a liaison between the team and the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, inspects assigned areas and provides feedback to the Supervisor/Superintendent on the quantity and quality of daily work produced by the team.
  • Works with management to resolve customer needs.
  • Responsible for simple record keeping including maintaining and evaluating equipment and supply log.
  • Works with Supervisor to monitor attendance and punctuality of the team.
  • Build trusting relationships by acting with integrity, courtesy, and responsibility, even in the face of stress or demanding workplace conditions.
  • Assists with project estimates. Makes recommendations regarding annual budgets for operational and maintenance needs.
  • Ability to guide, direct and coach others regarding application and interpretation of technical issues.
  • Ability to adjust set guidelines to address material needs, time frames, personnel issues, etc.
  • Maintain condition of departmental vehicles, tools, supplies, and shop environment.
  • Assist with retrieval and closing of work orders in a timely manner.
  • 10% Safety

  • Provides safety training to assigned staff as required.
  • Wear proper personal protective equipment ( PPE) as required such as gloves, goggles, ear plugs, and safety footwear.
  • Ensures compliance with established safety standards, Assist with the identification of and completion of safety training.
  • 20 %Customer Service:

  • Anticipate customer needs, address, and resolve concerns promptly and respectfully. · Monitor the process to ensure customers are well satisfied.
  • Recognize how work activities and behavior impact clients and the University.
  • Demonstrate ability to make recommendations resulting in improved processes within funding constraints.
  • Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

    High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in trade(s) areas assigned; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

    A valid driver's license. Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record, preferably five or more years of driving experience with no more than one minor at fault accident or violation in the past three years.

    Knowledge skills and abilities:

Ability to insist on providing high quality service for internal and external customers. Show customer focus by seeking out, understanding, and responding to internal and external customers' needs. Responds to customer's needs, questions, and concerns in an accurate, effective, and timely manner.

    Knowledge-Technical - Advises staff of specialized grounds maintenance techniques and processes for use in unusual situations or problems. General knowledge of established grounds procedures and techniques, and special applications required in assigned areas. Ability to follow a daily work schedule and observe performance of a small work group and react to situations requiring minor adjustments to routine.

    Dependability/Attendance - Ability to demonstrate dependability, which requires daily attendance. Ability to report to work daily, for a full shift, at an appropriate time. Ability to submit leave request at least 5 days in advance as much as possible.

    Communication- Conveys information clearly, confidently, and with proper tone. Facilitates open communication. Uses discretion and demonstrates sensitivity to confidentiality concerns. Listens effectively and provides appropriate feedback. Should check and respond to emails daily. Ability to develop and deliver written information to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message.

    Planning/Organizing- Ability to plan the daily work schedule of the staff by prioritizing the organization's needs and implementing procedures to ensure that the tasks are completed effectively and efficiently.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Institutional Locksmith Association member
  • Institutional locksmith Association membership.
  • Certified Journey Level certification and/or Fire Door Inspector certification, but not contingent for position.

  • 5 years of progressive Building Trades experience at the Journeyman level.

  • 3+ years locksmith experience
