The Department of Literacy, Early, Bilingual, Special Education (LEBSE) at CSU Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure‐track position as an Assistant Professor in literacy education with an emphasis in early childhood education (ECE). The successful candidate will teach post-baccalaureate teacher candidates and graduate students, serve on thesis/project committees, conduct scholarly research, and engage in service activities.

Primary teaching responsibilities include foundational courses for early childhood education, literacy education, and developmental theory. The typical course load in Kremen School of Education is 4/4 (3-unit courses), with possible course releases for coordinating programs and conducting research. Newly hired tenure-track faculty also receive one course release per semester for the first two years. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Job Responsibilities

● Teach Courses in the Literacy graduate program, Early Childhood Education Graduate Program, and Credential Programs.

● Maintain an active research agenda in early literacy settings focusing on children age 0-8

● Take action on diversity, equity, and inclusion with local early childhood stakeholders

● Provide support for the existing and new partnerships and teacher residencies

● Advise and mentor students' fieldwork experiences, projects, and theses.

● Contribute to national and state accreditation through conducting data collection and analysis.

● Serve as Early Childhood Education graduate program coordinator as needed. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Literacy Studies, Literacy Education, Reading, Early Childhood Education, Bilingual Education, Psychology, or closely related fields.

Candidates nearing completion of their doctorate (ABD) may be considered. However, for an appointment, the doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2022.

Required Experience:

Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds

Successful teaching experience in ECE settings (0-8).

Strong background in applying best literacy practices in early childhood settings (0-8).

Evidence of engaging in and disseminating early childhood/literacy research.

Preferred Experience :

A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience at the PreK-2 level.

Evidence of commitment to social justice/culturally sustaining pedagogy.

Have knowledge of and experience implementing the principles in the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) code of Ethical Conduct and NAEYC's Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators.

Ability to teach graduate-level writing courses.

    The mission of the Early Childhood Education Program is to empower early childhood teachers and program leaders to positively affect children's and families' lives and learning in a culturally and linguistically diverse society. The Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education program is the ONLY nationally accredited Early Childhood Education master's program in the state of California recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

    Across campus there are numerous opportunities for collaboration with other departments and programs. The Fresno State Programs for Children (PFC) includes three centers: The Joyce M. Huggins Early Education Center (Huggins Center), the Campus Children's Infant/Toddler Center, and the Campus Children's Preschool Center, all of which provide services for children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years and learning spaces for our program's students. This community-serving organization serves approximately 200 racially and economically mixed children (46% Hispanic, 24% White, 4% Black/African American, 11% Asian, and 15% multi-racial) of Fresno State students, faculty, staff, and local community residents.
