Overview

The Library seeks a friendly, detail-oriented individual with a strong public service orientation to work at the East Asian Library. This position will spend a significant portion of the workday fulfilling document delivery requests in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Western languages, shipping items to various locations and creating missing item records.

Responsibilities

Position handles the lending side of the Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery Service and Borrow Direct at the East Asian Library, which involves requests in Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Western-languages: it quickly and accurately process these requests, verifies citations, retrieves items, ships items or puts scanned articles on a server, and communicates with users and other libraries. In addition, the position handles all shipping to ReCap, Annex, Borrow Direct, and items needing to be shipped to Firestone or University branch libraries.

This position handles creating item records for items without them. Proficiency in reading Chinese, traditional and simplified, or Japanese characters is preferred to be able to successfully complete this project. This project necessitates attention to detail because the position handles the tracking of the project, processing the books to go back on the shelf in the correct area, and ensuring all information on the item record is correct.

Part of a small circulation team in a branch library the position will occasionally act as a supervisor to student workers and assist in operating the circulation desk when other staff or student workers are unavailable. To enable continuing full circulation services, the position will be cross- trained in other circulation duties to ensure continuing support during planned or unplanned absences of the other team members. Supervision of student workers may include training them on the basics of shelving and answering questions that arise. All duties may involve physical work in addition to computer processing.

This position interacts with the following software: Google Drive suite, Alma, ILLiad interlibrary loan/document delivery service, and Microsoft suite.

Qualifications

Required:

 Demonstrated reliability and independence, as this individual will open or close the department at times.
 Proficiency in reading the characters of one of the following languages: Chinese, Japanese or Korean.
 Strong customer service philosophy as demonstrated through warm and friendly communication
 Must work well under pressure and be flexible to accommodate changes in the work
 Demonstrated ability to work constructively with co-workers and the public, and to work quickly, accurately and with great attention to detail.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to follow complex processes and instructions. 
 Facility with a PC environment, file structure and moving files between servers, email, cloud-based software, along with a willingness to learn new technology.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience working in a library.
  • Familiarity with library-specific software such as Alma, Springshare, and ILLaid
  • NOTE: This is a part-time position. Hours are: Monday - Thursday 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. (20 hours per week)
