The College of Health Science and Public Health and the Department of Wellness and Movement Sciences invites applications for a Lecturer of Therapeutic Recreation in the Recreation and Leisure Services (RCLS) program to begin mid-September 2021. Appointment rank will be as Lecturer for a one year appointment for AY2021-2022. Lecturer positions may be reappointed.

The required start date for this position is 09/16/2021. This position requires that the candidate be available to be on campus in Cheney, WA on a regular basis — this is not an online teaching position.

The successful candidate hired into this position will be welcomed into an academic community dedicated to cultural diversity, community engagement, and social justice.

The candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Therapeutic Recreation major, general recreation and related areas. The candidate may be expected to advise Therapeutic Recreation majors toward program completion and internship opportunities. Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.

The department's undergraduate programs prepare students to complete degrees in Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education, Public Health, Recreation and Tourism Management, Outdoor Recreation, and Therapeutic Recreation. We have Master of Science degrees in Athletic Training and in Wellness and Movement Sciences with two tracks – Sports and Recreation Administration and Exercise Science.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreation or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:

  • Master's, ABD or Doctorate in Recreation or closely related field.
  • Expertise in therapeutic recreation.
  • Extensive teaching and industry experience.
  • Certified as a CTRS through the national Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • Undergraduate student advising experience.

    Responsibility / Duty

    Typical workload for this position will involve 45 credits per academic year, subject to Department needs, mainly at EWU's main campus in Cheney, WA.

    Responsibilities will consist of teaching and/or release time to perform administrative duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the business needs of the department.

  • May be required to advise undergraduate students.
  • All faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and in assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Teaching also includes the following additional related responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:

  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines
  • Based on credentials and availability, the candidate may be able to supervise Therapeutic Recreation internships during summer of 2022. This opportunity would be under a separate summer contract.
