About the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
The School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences was formally
established in 2021, following the merger of the Schools of Geography and
Earth Sciences. The School offers undergraduate and graduate programs in these
core discipline areas, and in the multi-disciplinary fields of climate change,
environmental studies, and environmental science. The research within the
School is built upon extensive expertise in geography, geoscience and
atmospheric science, ranging from the social sciences through to the
quantitative physical sciences.
About the Role
The opportunity exists for an outstanding academic in Human Geography to
fill a new position within the School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric
Sciences, with a particular focus on environmental politics and policy.
The successful applicant will contribute to teaching excellence, primarily in
the geography program, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels –
providing a high-quality learning experience for students through the
development of curriculum and innovative subject material, and through the
delivery of lectures, practicals and potentially field work programs. They
will also demonstrate a commitment to the supervision of research students at
undergraduate and graduate levels.
The incumbent will significantly contribute to research projects in the broad
area of environmental politics and policy, producing high-quality research
outputs and publications in international refereed journals and attract
competitive grant funding from various sources.
At level C, they will be expected to significantly contribute to research
projects and leadership of research teams.
Publishing research findings in international refereed journals and
presentation of results at seminars, conferences, and meetings
Preparing research proposals for submission to external funding bodies to
obtain funding to support their research
Engaging with the wider community via interactions with government,
industry, the media, public lectures, and/or outreach activities
Providing academic mentoring and assistance to students
Contributing to a range of administrative functions, including those
connected with their research activities, teaching responsibilities and
the administration and governance of the School and / or Faculty of

the School, which embraces its key disciplines as well as the multi-
disciplinary synergies across the School and Faculty.
The successful applicant will have teaching and research interests that
focus on environmental politics and policy and may also intersect with one or
more of the School's multidisciplinary areas, such as climate change and/or

research and publication, with capacity to establish collaborations with
researchers nationally and internationally, and potential to attract
competitive research funding from varied sources.
You will also have:
A PhD in geography or a related discipline
Evidence of the ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses
specifically on environmental or climate politics and policy, and more
general topics on human geography with a focus on the environment
A demonstrated capacity to supervise undergraduate and graduate research
A potential or demonstrated capacity to initiate or contribute to service
activities within the School, the Faculty of Science, and the broader
A demonstrated ability in interpersonal and organisational skills
including the ability to project manage, meet deadlines, and interact with
colleagues from a broad range of disciplines in a collegial, respectful,
and effective manner
At level C, the incumbent will also have:
An aptitude for independent research with a strong record of publication
and/or other research outputs, a record of gaining external competitive
research grants, commensurate with experience and opportunities, and the
ability to develop research links with other departments/groups nationally
A track record of success in teaching at university level (or
equivalent), and the ability to develop and teach relevant discipline
subjects at a graduate level
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and to contribute to the
organisational development of the School, Faculty and the University as a
