The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health. The REF ranked CSEE 6 in the UK for Computer Science research power and 100% of its research impact was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. CSEE is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students. The school has seen tremendous growth recently as a result of its research and education output and is looking for lecturers who can help continue the development of the school and its students.

Duties of the Role

The successful candidates will be expected to deliver excellent research and teaching, to generate research income, to contribute to the administration and management of the school and to its local, regional, and international profile.

The posts will include teaching on our courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. This may include delivering existing modules, developing new modules and generally enhancing our research-led teaching. We aim for excellence in education as well as research and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both posts.

Robotics or Mechatronics

The successful candidate will become a member of the Embedded Systems and Robotics group and is expected to bridge expertise in the areas of mechatronics, robotics and artificial. It is anticipated that the candidate will develop new research activities that will become recognised as outstanding and internationally leading.

We are particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in mechatronics, Autonomous Robotics, 3D Printing, AI Technology, System-on-Chip, Computer Aided Design, Human Robot Collaboration, and Human Augmentation, and are interested supporting key robotics themes like agricultural, food, assistive robotics for health and social care, medical robotics, manufacturing, and extreme environments.

The successful candidate will collaborate with existing staff in the Robotics and Embedded Systems research group within CSEE, especially also the EPSRC National Centre for Nuclear Robotics and across all faculties with a research interest in emerging robotics technologies.

Skills and qualifications required

The successful candidates will have a PhD in a relevant discipline or be close to completion and ideally will also have fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate.

You will have confirmed experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, and of designing and planning learning activities. You must also be able to demonstrate evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes, and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.

To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
