Job description

The School of Health and Social Care (HSC)

The School has an excellent reputation for teaching and research in health and social care. Our academic members of staff include dental professionals, social workers, nurses, allied health care professionals, psychologists and sociologists. The School is run over two campuses, based at Southend and Colchester. Academic staff are supported by a team of administrative staff based at both Colchester and Southend campuses.

We are at the forefront of preparing people to solve real-life issues in health and society, offering courses and research that both commissioners and employers believe in. We work in partnership with various people, who offer us their expertise and experience, making us a team of people who truly understand what is needed from health and social care professionals and services– now and in the future.

The School is currently going through exciting changes and expansion, with an increase in student numbers, an intention to prepare for submission to Unit Assessment 3 (research focusing on Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy) for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF), and the introduction of new courses, including the Nurse Associate Apprenticeship, and Masters in Global Public Health. We are also expanding and building new and innovative areas for student study, including new clinical skills spaces, consultation rooms and study areas.

The School of Health and Social Care is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Oral Health.

Duties of the Role

You will contribute to the administration and management of the School, and to the local, regional and international profile of the School, and provide some clinical supervision, where appropriate.

Your ongoing development is important to us, and you will have the opportunity to work closely with your Head of Division, the School's Director of Staff Development and Wellbeing, and the Dean, to enhance your potential and achieve your aims.

You will also contribute actively to excellence in education by designing and delivering broadly based, substantive and effective teaching, and provide learning support, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (e.g. curriculum development and review, assessment and feedback, research supervision, etc.) as agreed with the Dean of School/ Head of Group for Oral Health. Applicants should have a strong commitment to team working and to enhancing the contribution of both research and education to Oral Health, including Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy.

In addition, for ASER contracts, you will develop a research agenda, which pursues individual and/or collaborative research objectives and produce research outputs for publication, engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate research income.

A full list of duties can be found within the respective jobpacks attached.

Qualifications and Skills required

The successful candidate will have a relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice and will have Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate. In addition, you will have a current registration with the GDC in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene or Dental Therapy, with a clear record to practice.

Clinical competence and experience of full scope of practice of a dental therapist or dentist, a commitment to uphold the GDC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics and to exhibit professional behaviours and attitudes in keeping with the GDC and NHS values are essential for this post.

In addition, for ASER contracts, candidates will have a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes and evidence of a research agenda, engagement in high-quality research activity and a developing research profile.

Please state within the application the level of contract you are applying for and which campus; Colchester or Southend. If you are applying ASE level, you will not need to submit a research statement or a three-year funding plan.

At the University of Essex, internationalism and diversity is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries, faiths and backgrounds, where you can find the world in one place.

To support this commitment we have our Global Forum, a staff-led network that promotes and celebrates the rich cultural diversity among Essex staff, and our Colchester campus based Faith Centre, which hosts regular services, meetings and events organised by our chaplains and faith representatives.
