About the Brandeis University Education Program

The Brandeis Education Program engages in the practical application of our scholarly work. Our approach to teaching and learning is driven by four pursuits: Teaching for Social Justice , Teaching as Inquiry , Teaching ALL Learners , and Teaching for Understanding. At Brandeis, ‘teaching for social justice' isn't just a slogan or lofty ideal; it's about teachers' everyday interactions with students and their daily work in schools. Whether in the university or in pk-12 schools, we focus on the students - who they are, what they bring, and how they think.

About the Position

The Brandeis Teacher Education Program seeks an Instructor for the undergraduate course: Exploring Secondary School Teaching. This is the first education course many undergraduates will have taken; it is paired with a “pre- practicum” in a local middle or high school. The classroom experience is fully integrated with the course content. The course introduces students to the macro, broader issues in education and how these connect the micro, specific aspects of secondary school teaching. As students critically examine the work of others, they continuously reflect on the ways our own positions in the world inform our outlooks on teaching and learning Through interactive activities, readings, guided analysis of video and classroom observations, students investigate classroom culture, student thinking, and curriculum/lesson planning. This course also provides students with the opportunity to “try out teaching” as they will begin to develop proficiency in some elements of the Massachusetts Professional Standards for Teachers (PSTs).

There is an existing syllabus, but the instructor would have flexibility in re-shaping it in collaboration with Teacher Education faculty.

Timing and Compensation:

  • Course runs January 18 May 3 ; final exams May 6 – 17
