  • Role Description Department

    We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Teaching & Scholarship) in the Chemistry Department to contribute to undergraduate teaching of Digital Chemistry (e.g. coding, data analysis, modelling and simulations, measurement computational chemistry, and automation, etc.) as well as to support the development of a new faculty-wide MSc programme in Applied Data Sciences.

    The MSc will start in 2023 with topics such as programming, statistics, machine learning, big data, and data visualisation applied to the natural sciences. The programme will equip science graduates with a range of data science skills that can be used across scientific disciplines, either in academia or industry. The appointee will support the ongoing development of course material for the new programme, and there may also be opportunities to gain experience in the admissions and marketing aspects of the course.

    For the undergraduate courses, activities may include the design and running of teaching in support of laboratory activities, as well as delivery of lectures, tutorials and workshops. Both UG and PG teaching may involve supervision of project students, pastoral support, and providing an excellent student experience for students.     Main purpose of the role
  • To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students
  • To lecture, supervise and lead, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • To contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities associated with the course
  • Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed
  • PhD in Chemistry or a closely related subject, and appropriate academic teaching qualification or willingness to complete this
  • Specialist knowledge of digital chemistry, and its application to scientific problems
  • Well-developed computational, analytical, IT and communication skills with the ability to present at conferences
  • Knowledge, ability, experience and commitment to designing and delivering teaching and learning at undergraduate level chemistry to enthuse and engage students
  • Commitment to and understanding of Equality and Diversity Issues
  • Demonstrable capacity for creative thinking and planning with attention to detail, a positive attitude and commitment to personal development
