Job Details Description

The Lead Stationary Engineer is responsible for the management, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical power systems supporting the academic, research, and clinic environments of Midwestern University. This lead role oversees a team encompassing Stationary Engineers, Building Mechanics, and Mechanical Technicians covering multiple shifts and providing seven-day coverage. The position reports to the Supervisor of Engineering Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction to the mechanical engineering team in performing daily and weekly responsibilities and duties. Prepares schedules and work assignments for personnel;
  • Oversees and monitors the operation and maintenance of boilers and related commercial, residential, hospital, and kitchen equipment located in multiple buildings.
  • Oversees the work performed by staff members, including emergency repairs to a variety of plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, and other equipment.
  • Develops and executes operational procedures for building equipment and stationary engineering operations.
  • Uses blueprints, diagrams, schematic drawings, and maintenance manuals to locate sources and diagnose problems with electrical, plumbing, and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and directs service calls to Stationary Engineers and other maintenance personnel, including contracted vendors.
  • Ensures staff performs work safely and in compliance with appropriate codes and regulations.
  • Orders supplies, parts, and equipment necessary for operation and maintenance activities.
  • Employs technology systems to perform and record preventive maintenance procedures and document maintenance records.
  • Plans training program for Stationary Engineers, Building Mechanics, and Mechanical Technicians. Trains and monitors the competency of staff in performing primary work responsibilities.
  • Secures price quotations for supplies and repairs, including multiple quotes as necessary per the university guidelines.
  • Oversees and utilizes open material and service accounts; monitors expenditures to ensure compliance within established budget guidelines; communicates discrepancies with the Supervisor.
  • Oversees outside contractors performing HVAC maintenance and repair services to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Coordinates air filter changes for all main buildings on campus and clinics. Coordinates apartment filter changes and changing filters.
  • Maintains chiller, boiler and water tower, water pumps, chemicals, motors central plant of mechanical plants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Education and/or Experience

    High School diploma or GED required. Must have a State of Illinois Stationary Engineer license. One year certificate from college/technical school or Associates degree or equivalent from two year College/Technical school is preferred. EPA Universal Certification is required. Must have a combination of experience, education, and formal training equivalent to 6 or more years of development as an HVAC/mechanical professional. Experience in building maintenance is desired. A valid driver's license is required.

    Computer Skills

    Computer proficiency in MS Office, Word. Excel knowledge is desired.

The noise level in this environment is moderately loud.
