The Computational Ecology Group (CEG) Inc. is seeking an experienced researcher or postdoc to support several conservation research projects that assess the impacts of landscape change on wildlife populations, and develop strategies to restore landscapes and recover populations. The successful candidate will join a team of research professionals, and contribute to collaborative projects through methods design, data gathering, analysis and writing. Analyses may include assessing climate and fire influences on vegetation cover, habitat modeling, connectivity mapping, and timeseries analysis. They will develop a range of statistical and spatial models and contribute to larger simulation projects.

We are looking for someone who can work collaboratively with CEG team members, government, industry, and other partners to interpret study results, and co- develop recommendations for future actions. Ideal candidates will have a relevant publication record, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrate initiative, and work well both independently and within teams.

Additional desired skills/experience:

  • PhD in landscape ecology, geography, or MSc with extensive spatial modeling experience
  • Experience finding, extracting, analyzing many kinds of spatial information
  • Spatial statistics and ecological statistics using remotely sensed data products
  • Climate change analysis experience relating to vegetation, wildlife habitat
  • Creating and using large GIS datasets
  • Strong coding skills in R, Python, or other language
  • High performance computing knowledge
  • Experience developing R shiny apps, results dashboards, GIS story maps, interactive user experiences
  • Interest in collaborative engagement via a remote work environment
  • Problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn a range of new skills and tasks
  • Attention to detail, and the ability to develop realistic project timelines
  • Compensation : CEG offers flexible, remote work. We welcome applicants who want to work part- or full-time. This position is virtual and open to scientists residing in Canada. Preference will be given to work-eligible Canadians living in western North America, near Canmore AB. This position will start as a research contract but could transition to salary-based employment (with EI, CPP, health, vacation benefits) after 3 months. Estimated (full- time) annual salary: $60,000 CAD. Preferred start date: Sept. 15 – Nov. 1, 2023.
