Position Function:

Perform laboratory testing and other duties as assigned in support of the catfish and other aquatics food research program. Perform a variety of routine and specialized research/diagnostic duties in the laboratory requiring considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of applied sciences, laboratory techniques, and methods for obtaining research/diagnostic data. The position requires an ability to assume responsibility for and carry out directed research, and to work independently or cooperatively with minimum supervision. The individual must be able to work cooperatively with other team members and persons of various disciplines. The individual must demonstrate interest, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude for carrying out goals of the catfish and other aquatics food research program. This research involves extensive laboratory and occasional field work. The ability to travel and work some weekends may be required.

Department Profile:

Coastal Research and Extension Center serves as the coastal arm of Mississippi State University's Research and Extension Programs. This position in based in Pascagoula, MS at the Experimental Seafood and Processing Lab.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following examples are intended as illustrations only of the various types of duties assigned in positions allocated to this classification. Collect research/diagnostic samples and prepare these for laboratory analysis. 2. Participate in establishing and maintaining research experiments and cultures. 3. Calibrate, operate, and maintain various laboratory equipment and devices in analysis of research/diagnostic samples. 4. Order and inventory laboratory supplies and materials and make sure all chemicals, solvents and especially corrosive materials are kept in line with the safety rules. 5. Gather, compile, and summarize data. Set up tables and graphs and assist in statistical analysis. 6. May perform literature searches. 7. Use computer to maintain data and prepare reports. 8. Assist in preparing materials for analysis. 9. Perform related duties as assigned. 10. Maintain a safe and clean facility. 11. Operation and maintenance of specialized equipment. 12. Prepare and keep SOP for each equipment and provide training for those people who need.

Supervision: Received: Supervision from a designated faculty member or scientist. Given: Provide assistance to employees in routine sample collection or lab duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biology, Life science or a closely related field. Experience: Two (2) years of lab work experience. Substitutions: An equivalent combination of related education and related experience may be considered for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to a candidate with a Doctoral degree in food science, microbiology or a closely related field and meat laboratory management or meats judging experience. Candidates with publications as first author are preferred. Candidates with hands-on experience in chromatography, electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE), PCR, ELISA, bacteria inoculation are preferred. Candidates with research experience in aquatic products including but not limited to processing, shelf-life, protein, hydrolysis, flavor, and pathogen are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Skills: Knowledge and correct operation of various basic lab instruments.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Frequent heavy or intense physical requirements may be required. The position has routine deadlines; usually, sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than the immediate supervisor. Job frequently requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Job occasionally requires sitting, climbing, or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/ crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.
