Job Summary/Basic Function

About This Role:

The purpose of this position is to provide technical support and assist with the research and teaching of the College of Engineering specifically with the Electrical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering departments at Lamar University. This support includes the management of labs and assistance to students with academic and research projects, by maintaining and updating all lab equipment and fixtures in classrooms and laboratories, maintaining inventory, and providing additional assistance as needed.

Position Duties:

  • Help teaching Circuits Lab, Electronics Lab Microcomputers Lab, and Senior Design as needed.
  • Help teaching Fluid mechanics, hydraulics, geotechnical, surveying, structure, and material Lab as needed.
  • Maintain the operation of computer in labs, offices, and classrooms, including software installation and update.
  • Assist with departmental and faculty purchasing, ordering, receiving, handling and maintaining.
  • Help with faculty members in their research work for equipment.
  • Help research students with experiments, presentations, etc.
  • Keeping the equipment, computers and materials used in our teaching labs well maintained.
  • Maintaining the operation of computers in labs, offices, and classrooms, including software installation and update.
  • Maintaining the chemical inventories and required SDSs and other documentation in our labs.
  • Assisting with safety procedures, training, ppe and inspections in our laboratories.
  • Assisting with departmental equipment/property inventories and records.
  • Assisting with departmental and faculty purchasing, ordering, and receiving and handling of computer and laboratory items.
  • Helping faculty members install, update and maintain the materials and equipment in their research area.
  • Performing other jobs as needed for teaching and research assigned by departmental chair.

    What You'll Need to Succeed – Minimum Qualifications

    To be successful in this role and a great addition to our team we need you to come with the following:

  • Associate degree in Technology, Engineering, science, or related field is required.
  • One year of experience in manufacturing and/or electrical/mechanical work is preferred.
  • Two years of experience in civil, environmental or computer related work is preferred.
  • A valid US or Canadian driver's license
  • Must be currently authorized to work in US.
  • Key Competencies:

  • Good communication skills and ability to interpret oral/written instructions.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical concepts; materials testing concepts and mechanical engineering technology lab test equipment.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance and repair.
  • Skills and experience in computer systems, including hardware, MS Office, OS maintenance and CAD/CAM software.
  • Experience with programming, soldering skills and working with multiphase electrical equipment.
  • Physical Requirements:

  • Medium physical requirements, exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly or 60lbs occasionally.
  • Operational knowledge of manual/power tools.
