Position Summary

The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for managing the operation and inventory of the microbiology teaching laboratories. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities: Maintains inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies. Disburses equipment and supplies to faculty and students. Dispenses chemicals according to governmental safety regulations. Prepares bid lists for filling inventory requirements. Meets with sales representatives of vendors offering laboratory equipment and supplies. Makes minor repairs on lab equipment and refers major repairs to vendor technicians. Assists faculty in development of class presentations requiring laboratory items. Updates laboratory procedure manuals as needed. Performs other duties as assigned. Secondary responsibilities: When needed, they may serve as instructional support for the microbiology and anatomy & physiology labs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of scientific subjects, such as chemistry, physics, or biology. Knowledge of general laboratory procedures. Knowledge of governmental safety regulations regarding laboratory chemicals and supplies. Ability to maintain inventory of equipment and supplies in a scientific laboratory. Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.

Required Education and/or Experience

The formal education of a high school diploma; plus two years of specialized training in applied science or related field; plus one year of experience maintaining a scientific laboratory or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

Preferred Education and/or Experience

At least a bachelor's degree in biology or chemistry is desired. It would be helpful if the applicant had prior experience in microbiology.
