The Laboratory Animal Technician is an hourly, entry-level-position ($18.00/hour) that is responsible for performing operational, administrative, and technical tasks to provide comprehensive care for all species of laboratory animals at the institution. The position shares responsibility of the overall day-to-day functioning of the rodent facilities as well as receives cross training in aquatic species. While animal husbandry is the primary focus, there are additional educational opportunities available to receive advanced training, certifications, and unique hands-on experience with research being conducted at the institution.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all routine tasks necessary to maintain appropriate facility conditions for physical environment (housing, space recommendations, temperature and humidity, ventilation, illumination), behavioral management (structural environment, social environment, activity), and husbandry (feeding, water, bedding changes, sanitation, waste disposal, pest control)
  • Must comply with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), the Guide for the Care and Use of Animals (Guide), PHS Policy (Policy), and OSHA regulations for the animal care and use program (ACUP) and effectively communicate these standards/requirements to researchers and staff to ensure understanding and compliance
  • Work collaboratively with all principal investigators, research staff, the IACUC, and other personnel to maintain regulatory standards of housing and care in the animal facilities. There are opportunities to network with principal investigators and receive hands-on experience with advanced handling procedures and behavior techniques.
  • Additionally, there are opportunities to attend relevant conferences, receive advanced training in genotyping techniques to earn micro credentials, and interact directly with the IACUC committee as a potential member.
  • Work efficiently with university departments to ensure proper preventative and ongoing maintenance, security, and cleanliness of rodent and aquatic animal facilities
  • Communicate regularly with the attending veterinarian (AV) and provide appropriate support in the absence of the AV with respect to animal health issues/concerns.
  • Monitor/track population management (identification and records, genetics, and nomenclature), and create and distribute weekly census counts to users
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays, and willingness to provide emergency coverage as needed. Work schedules can be flexible.
  • As part of the responsibilities, technicians will have an opportunity to learn how to genotype transgenic animals, analyze results, and assist with creating and maintaining complex breeding schemes.

  • Qualifications

  • Some college course work completed preferred (degree not required)
  • A minimum of 0 -2 years of animal facility experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Ability to work in a highly regulated environment
  • Ability obtain an assistant laboratory animal technician (ALAT) certification through the American Association for Laboratory Science (AALAS) after one year of employment.
