Work Arrangements
This regular, 7.5 month repeating term part-time (25 hours per week)
position is available starting January 3, 2024 to August 16, 2024. Regular
hours of work are Monday–Friday, 9am – 2pm. Times may change depending on the
Department's need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The
position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, the successful
candidate must be available for occasional work at the New
Westminster/Coquitlam campus.

The Role
The Lab Facilitator, TESL Practicum provides laboratory instruction,
evaluation, and supervision of TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language)
and EAL (English as an Additional Language) students in the TESL practicum
lab, including the preparation and adaptation of materials for use in the
classroom and for training purposes subject to the curricula approved by TESL
faculty. Provides exceptional client-centered service on a consistent basis to
all stakeholder groups
Responsibilities
1. Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration to TESL students
related to their teaching practicum.
Demonstrates the correct use of equipment or materials needed in the
class;
Provides ongoing laboratory instructional support to TESL students with
the class of EAL learners through short group activities;
Reviews each TESL student's practicum plan in collaboration with the
practicum faculty supervisor, making sure that all practicum requirements
are met;
Reviews each TESL student's lesson plan for every hour of the teaching
practicum, providing feedback and answering student questions;
Provides direct one-on-one and small group tutoring regarding teaching
practice when needed; and
Develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning.
2. Evaluates TESL students' work and performance in relation to the
teaching practicum lab requirements.
Supervises TESL practicum students as they teach a group of EAL learners;
Evaluates any discrepancies between the lesson plan and the teaching
practice to help TESL students learn from experience;
Provides feedback to TESL practicum students and TESL faculty on each
student's performance specific to verbal delivery, classroom management,
student engagement, lesson delivery, and use of resources after each
teaching portion, following the guidelines approved by TESL faculty;
Provides feedback to TESL practicum students and TESL faculty on each
student's performance specific to professional conduct, cultural
awareness, and culturally appropriate behaviors, following the guidelines
approved by TESL faculty;
Aggregates common student challenges noted during practicum observations;
and
Collaborates with the TESL coordinator to note any issues with TESL
student adherence to the TESL professionalism policy, as outlined in the
TESL Handbook.
3. Prepares materials for use in the TESL Practicum Lab, subject to
curricula approval by the TESL faculty.
Sets up equipment and ensure that the classroom is a clean, safe, and
stimulating learning environment;
Prepares training and learning materials consistent with the needs of
faculty and TESL students;
Maintains inventory of resource equipment, materials, and lesson plans for
each student to be used during the practicum;
Organizes and maintains electronic files and records of learning
resources; and
Refers students to appropriate audio / visual study materials, when
needed.
4. Performs other related duties.
Assists in admission of EAL learners, including language assessment, in
collaboration with TESL and ELLA faculty coordinators;
Organizes class(es) of EAL learners in preparation for TESL teaching
practicums;
Maintains communication with EAL learners to ensure a positive learning
environment for each TESL trainee;
Keeps attendance records; and
Assists with external communication as needed.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
Completion of an undergraduate degree at an accredited post-secondary
institution;
A minimum qualification of TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language)
Canada Professional Certificate Standard One;
A minimum of 2,000 hours of adult EAL (English as an Additional
Language) classroom teaching experience or equivalent;
Good working knowledge of the principles of effective language
acquisition;
Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills;
Familiarity with computer-based language learning activities;
Speak English fluently;
Facilitate educational activities in a small and large group setting;
Follow the forms provided by faculty members;
Facilitate tutoring in small group or one-on-one settings;
Produce and maintain accurate documentation (attendance records, progress
reports, lists of learning materials and online resources, etc.);
Be organized and able to work with multiple colleagues to collaborate on
the delivery of the TESL teaching practicum for each TESL student;
Work independently under minimum supervision to meet deadlines and to
establish priorities;
Exercise initiative within a team and propose solutions to problems that
arise; and
Provide efficient, client-centered service in person, in writing, or
through teleconferencing tools with the College community and outside
stakeholders.
