Laboratory Animal Medicine Post Doctoral Appointee

IU-Purdue-Lilly Residency Consortium

Indianapolis and Lafayette, Indiana

Position Summary :

Indiana University School of Medicine has an opening for a laboratory animal resident position. This training program combines a three-year ACLAM-approved laboratory animal residency with a Master's degree earned through Purdue University. The residency will offer students a unique combination of experiences by providing clinical rotations through each of the three distinct participating AAALAC-accredited institutions: Purdue University, Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), and Eli Lilly and Company.

The focus of the training program is designed to provide trainees with a wide breadth of experience in preparation for their career as a laboratory animal veterinarian and to assist trainees in attaining ACLAM board-eligibility. A key component of the program will focus on research and completion of a first authorship manuscript. Students entering the program who already have a MS/PhD and an appropriate first-author publication may have an option to complete the residency program on an accelerated two-year track.

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana about 45 miles north- east of Indianapolis. Purdue University has a diverse animal research population, ranging from traditional laboratory animal species to aquatics and agricultural animals. The campus also includes a veterinary school, which provides the trainee(s) with pathology exposure and access to additional veterinary resources. The research activities on both the Purdue and IUSM campus are strong and the trainee will have an opportunity to perform research work with faculty. IUSM is located in Indianapolis on the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus. Research at IUSM ranges from diabetes to cancer to Alzheimer's disease and more. Species housed at IUSM include zebrafish, frogs, rodents as well as USDA-covered species. Eli Lilly and Company is a large pharmaceutical company located in downtown Indianapolis. The work supported at this site is primarily toxicology and other research and development, GLP and GMP work. Trainee(s) will be exposed to the corporate environment during this segment of the residency rotation.

Employment will be classified as full time and based out of Indiana University School of Medicine. Classification of the trainee at IUSM will be as a non- tenure track faculty post-doctorate trainee position. An opportunity to participate in a university-provided healthcare benefit plan will be provided through IUSM.

As the nation's largest medical school, IUSM (as well as Purdue University and Eli Lilly and Company) are committed to being an institution that not only reflects the diversity of the learners we teach and the patient populations we serve, but also pursues the values of diversity, equity and inclusion that inform academic excellence.
