The Lab & Research Technician will be in the VIMS Alosine Monitoring Program, the primary objective of which is to monitor the stock status of shad and herrings in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Reporting to Research Professor in Fisheries Science, the Lab & Research Technician supports the collection of data and processing of samples related to the monitoring of American Shad, Blueback Herring, and Alewife. This includes work from small vessels, and driving to pick up points (coastal Virginia, including Eastern Shore, as necessary).

Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Assisting setting gill nets; assembling and loading gear and boats. Deploying nets. Assisting fishing gill nets, removing fishes from net. identifying and separating target species from by-catch. Assisting surface trawls during nighttime summer sampling. Deploying and retrieving trawl net by hand.

  • Processing samples of fish – Collecting data (weight, length & sex). Dissecting for otoliths and scales and processing scales & oliths for data collection). Recording data from elements and enter data into data base.

  • Cleaning and storing field gear and maintaining field gear storage areas.

  • Required Qualifications

    EDUCATION : High School Diploma or equivalent.


  • Knowledge of sampling and collection, with the demonstrated skills and abilities to sort species and performing basic measurements.

  • Knowledge of preparing samples and perform standard or routine lab testing.

  • Demonstrated skills in maintaining tools and equipment.

  • Proficiency in a variety of software applications to include MS office with the ability to record data.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the proven ability to work effectively with internal and external contacts.

  • Ability to work on small vessels, sometimes in adverse conditions.

  • Ability to lift and move fishes, nets, equipment, etc., up to 50 lbs.


  • Experience in using basic laboratory processing and sampling procedures.

  • Experience working in the field and or lab.

  • Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge and interest in fisheries or fish biology.

  • Knowledge of acoustic telemetry.

  • Experience collecting and entering data.

  • Experience working on small vessels.

  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and University policy. This position may be subject to over time during high peak times, upon preapproval by supervisor.

  • Ability to lift and move fishes, nets, equipment, etc., up to 50 lbs.
