Khalid bin Abdullah Al Saud Professorship for the Study of the Contemporary Arab World
Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies in association with Magdalen College
The Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) and Magdalen College intend to appoint to the Khalid bin Abdullah al Saud Professorship in the Study of the Contemporary Arab World with effect from 1 October 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. This post is a statutory professorship, which is the most senior academic grade at Oxford.
As the Al Saud Professor you will play a pivotal role in the University's teaching in, and research of, the modern Arab world and in the further development of Arab world studies at Oxford, including the review and development of graduate taught courses. This role represents an opportunity to build on your broad intellectual and cultural interests within a wide and increasingly interdisciplinary research field in Oxford. You will be expected to promote interdisciplinary projects across faculties and divisions, strengthening links with other programmes in the UK and overseas. You will provide academic leadership in promoting and sustaining research within the Arabic, Persian and Turkish subject group, and contribute to administrative roles in AMES.
You will be a scholar of the highest international calibre from a Humanities or Social Sciences discipline, with an outstanding record of research and publications in the study of the contemporary Arab world from the nineteenth century to the present day. You should be able to demonstrate an excellent record of teaching at undergraduate and graduate level and the ability to inspire and guide research students and early career colleagues. You should have a sufficiently high degree of expertise in the Arabic language to use original research materials and teach texts in that language (research proficiency in an additional language relevant to teaching and research in the field would be an advantage).
The Al Saud Professor will also hold a professorial fellowship at Magdalen College.
