    Junior Group Leader (fm)

    Urbanisation and sustainable mountain environments

    (full-time, 40h per week)

    starting date is January 2023. The initial appointment will be limited to 6 years and includes a tenure-track option.


    The successful candidate will be in charge to build a strong research program on urbanisation and sustainability in mountain regions and will contribute to the development of solutions to the great challenges in the 21st century. An innovative and inter- and transdisciplinary range of methods, is expected, which includes quantitative and qualitative social research. The candidates are expected to understand urbanisation both as a qualitative process of the spread of urban ways of life and as the expansion of morphological and functional urban structures. The innovate research design should address changes of urban-rural interactions and impacts on socio-ecological mountain systems.


    The Candidate should hold a PhD in Geography or related disciplines and have a (strong) background in urbanisation studies linked to mountain areas (in Europe and at least one non-European region). The junior group leader is expected to have the ability to lead a research group and a commitment to inter- and transdisciplinary mountain research (e.g., on landscape and land use, tourism, demographic changes, mobilities, regional development, protected areas, risk perception and human wellbeing). We are looking for a researcher with a proven track record including the experience to obtain external research funding on national and international levels. Strong involvement in international research is an asset. The junior group leader is expected to actively collaborate with researchers at the IGF and the related universities. Knowledge transfer to and collaboration with relevant institutes of the OeAW and the contribution to its research foci are also desirable. Transcultural competencies and the ability to communicate in local language of study areas and German (or willingness to learn German in a short time) are essential to conduct transdisciplinary research and policy advice also in the vicinity of the institute (Tyrol, Alpine region).


    The IGF offers an interdisciplinary and stimulating and dynamic research environment in Innsbruck. The working environment includes a flexible time arrangement, central downtown location of the office, the possibility to work independently, and access to the OeAW continuing education program (incl. language courses). The annual gross salary for this position is € 59.240,86, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW).
