Position Summary: Installs, constructs, maintains, and repairs: building non-load bearing drywall and metal stud walls; doors, builder's hardware, and metal and/or wood door frames; suspended ceiling systems; millwork and casework; and system furniture assembly.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: • Perform journeyperson level construction, installation, repair, assembly and maintenance of building wall systems, doors and frames, hardware, ceiling systems, and general building carpentry in accordance with pertinent state and local codes. • Provide technical guidance and assistance to the Building Maintenance Manager. • Assist the Design and Construction Department with carpentry related issues and renovation projects as directed. • Install, builds, and assembles millwork and casework. • Perform remodeling for Campus Repair and Maintenance projects as directed. • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the carpentry shop, assigned vehicles, storage areas, and tools used in the performance of duties. • Inspects work site to determine materials, equipment, tools requirements and methods to be used. • Plans lay out, assemble and install materials, equipment and fixtures as required by scope of work. • Follow a predetermined schedule of preventative maintenance as directed. • Erects or dismantles structures; repairs or refinishes walls or structures and erects scaffolding if required. • Recommend and maintain inventory of necessary supplies, materials, and equipment needed to perform carpentry and coordinates work with other Facilities skilled trades' staff. • Perform other related duties incidental to the work as directed by the Construction Project Manager.
Hours/Schedule: This position will work 40 hours per week. Schedule dependent on college need, so must have the ability to accept temporary shift changes with minimum notice. Physical Demands & Work Environment: • Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and scaffolding. • Demonstrated ability to lift and carry sixty (60) pounds. • Demonstrated ability to travel from building to building and floor to floor in multiple level buildings as well as enter and work in confined, awkward or cramped positions and concealed spaces. • Demonstrated ability to wear appropriate forms of respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and may require passing medical qualification examination for use of appropriate respirators. • Ability to work in all types of inclement weather, some sites may necessitate working at sites with noise greater than 90 decibels, may include heights, streets and roadways, and poorly ventilated areas.
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • High school diploma or GED certification. • Documented successful completion of a Department of Labor recognized Carpentry Apprenticeship Program. • Equivalent of five (5) years of full-time work experience as a Journeyperson Carpenter in a commercial, institutional, or industrial environment. • Demonstrated ability to climb ladders and scaffolding. • Ability to use a microcomputer including application software such as spreadsheets, database, and word-processing. • Demonstrated ability to lift and carry sixty (60) pounds. • Demonstrated ability to travel from building to building and floor to floor in multiple level buildings as well as enter and work in confined, awkward or cramped positions and concealed spaces. • Ability to work in all types of inclement weather, some sites may necessitate working at sites with noise greater than 90 decibels, may include heights, streets and roadways, and poorly ventilated areas. • Demonstrated ability to wear appropriate forms of respiratory protection, personal protective equipment (PPE), and may require passing medical qualification examination for use of appropriate respirators. • Possess a valid Michigan driver's license, and able to obtain and maintain a hi-lo certification. • Accept temporary shift changes with minimum notice and availability for weekend and on-call service. • Demonstrated ability to interact with clients, co-workers, and management in a positive, supportive and cooperative way.
