Position Function:

To install, operate and maintain all high (69 KV and lower) and low voltage (480 volt and lower) electrical utility systems, street lighting and traffic signal systems. Performs all classes of underground and overhead line work involving the installation, maintenance and operations of electrical distribution lines, substations and substation equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the University's high (13.2 KV) and low (480V and lower) utility systems. 2. Responsible for installation and modification of utility fiber optic and lighting systems as requested or required by the University. 3. Provides routine maintenance and repair of the University's traffic signal and street lighting systems. 4. Provides routine substation maintenance. Operate, maintain, and inspect the University's 60MVA, 69-13.2KV electric substation. 5. Performs tree trimming; maintains safe clearances between the university's electrical systems (13.2KV and below) and trees, vines, etc. 6. Performs equipment maintenance; safely maintains sophisticated and expensive (over $100,000) mechanized bucket, digger, and boring equipment. 7. This position has responsibility for the health and/or safety of others. Responsibilities include overseeing the safe use of equipment and materials and maintaining safety standards for the support staff when working in hazardous or dangerous conditions. 8. Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent High School Diploma or GED

Experience 6 yrs. experience in electrical distribution systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Certification or Licensure Requirements: Class A Commercial Driver's License or ability to acquire within one year.

Minimum Required Knowledge: Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade. Thorough knowledge of applicable electrical codes, rules, and regulations (local, state, and national). Ability to climb wooden and steel poles. Developed supervisory skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.

Frequent-Externally imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; travel or irregular hours often anticipated; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; may involve conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.

Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, climbing or balancing, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Job occasionally requires sitting, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting more than 100 pounds.

Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically, ability to distinguish colors.
