Position Summary

The College of Arts & Sciences of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a visionary scholar to hold the Joel R. Williamson Distinguished Professorship and serve as the Director of the Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS). The Joel R. Williamson Distinguished Professorship is a prestigious chair representing Carolina's enduring engagement with and commitment to the study of the American South. As part of the strategic plan Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good, the University reconfirms a campus-wide commitment to its home region through Southern Futures, embracing a strategic opportunity to bring together expertise and resources for building transformative relationships among campus, the state, and the region. As the CSAS Director is at the core of work on campus committed to the American South, they must connect to Southern Futures, guide the vision for its campus-wide commitment, and work as an ambassador for its transformative mission in the region.

The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in this campus priority from a position at the helm of CSAS. Founded nearly 30 years ago, the Center honors the South's long histories of exchange, creativity, conflict, and transformation and explores the history and cultures of its diverse peoples through rigorous scholarship, dialogue, collaboration, and the arts. Its work in publication, research, and teaching is informed by an ethical commitment to the highest standards of equity and critical inquiry. The Center provides intellectual support and strategy for multiple activities and initiatives, including dynamic core programs: Southern Cultures, an award-winning journal published by UNC Press, exploring the history, politics, folklore, literature, and arts of the South; and the Southern Oral History Program, a nationally renowned research project initiated 50 years ago to preserve voices of the American South. The Director's responsibilities for a four-year term include leading the Center in fulfilling its mission of generating and disseminating scholarship that shapes critical conversations about the region. Stewarding and advocating for the Center, the Director oversees the Center's annual budget, manages its staff, works with the College's Arts & Sciences Foundation to raise funds for programs and initiatives, co-directs Southern Futures, and helps to set the Center's communications strategy for both campus and public audiences.

The successful candidate will hold a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the departments of the College of Arts & Sciences.
