  • Role Description

    The University of York is an iconic Russell Group University, set in the picturesque medieval town in North Yorkshire. It's made up of about 25,000 users and has a turnover of around £400m per annum.

    Department

    Faculty IT provides support and development of systems to research and teaching departments across the University of York.

    This role is part of the Health and Social Sciences team within Faculty IT. Part of IT Services, the Team provides embedded support to the Department of Health Sciences, the Department of Economics and Related Studies, and the Centre for Health Economics. We are also responsible for managing the Data Safe Haven, our ISO/IEC 27001 certified secure research environment.

    Role

    The Department of Health Sciences is currently undergoing a transition from supplying and managing its own IT infrastructure to making increased use of centrally provided services. We need an enthusiastic and customer-focussed individual to join us to help support our staff and students through these changes.

    The range of IT and information security literacy varies widely, and you'll need excellent people and communication skills as you promote and instill best practice in all areas. You'll need to be willing to be flexible and adaptable in response to the changing needs of the role, and work out of hours when required.

    You will need to support users of the existing systems, help them to adapt to new systems, and ensure their ability to conduct world-class research and teaching throughout and after the process.

    You will help to provide a support service for staff and students. In addition, you will assist with the support of departmental computer hardware including mobile and desktop based systems, and you will have a willingness to get involved in the department's activities.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Practical experience of operational support in a modern managed desktop environment
  • Understanding of the needs of those working and studying in a higher education environment
  • Ability to convey technical and policy information to others with a range of levels of ability
  • Ability to plan and take responsibility for own work using initiative, seeking advice where necessary
  • A good working knowledge of computer hardware including laptops, mobile devices and their configuration
  • Practical experience of operational support in a modern managed desktop environment
  • Ability to analyse technical problems involving multiple systems and services
  • Evidence of behaviours that uphold our our University's values
