General Information

The Computer Science Department seeks a highly motivated individual to join the department as an undergraduate academic advisor and outreach coordinator. The Computer Science Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (CS) and Information Technology (IT). The department values a well-connected student community: this person will hold in-person meetings with our students, offer advising and community building events, and coordinate our student ambassadors to serve and support our students.

Along with academic advising, this position will coordinate outreach, including supporting visits, workshops, conferences, and summer camps as well as support our department's involvement with national and regional organizations, such as Capital Region Celebration of Women in Computing (CAPWIC) and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT).

This is a full-time, 12-month, Administrative and Professional Faculty position in the Computer Science Department, working under the supervision of the Academic Unit Head.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising to declared CS and IT students in our introductory course sequence and all fully admitted IT majors.
  • Advise assigned students, monitor academic progress, communicate regularly with advisees, and connect them with campus resources and opportunities to foster a sense of community and enrich student experience.
  • Help first year CS and IT students formulate meaningful and appropriate academic plans based on their interests and goals, providing guidance on the General Education curriculum, major and degree requirements, and academic opportunities.
  • Communicate processes for being accepted into the majors and direct students to resources when not accepted into the CS or IT major.
  • Serve the department through committees, service projects, and academic and curricular initiatives.
  • Support students on academic probation and suspension by helping them understand academic expectations and identify strategies to improve academic performance.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts including community workshops and visits, prospective student visits, conferences, and summer camps.
  • Participate in first-year orientation.
  • Represent the department at academic open houses and other recruitment events and respond to inquiries about our academic programs.
  • Collaborate with the Departmental Advising Team to enhance students' experience and guide students' understanding of opportunities for computing paths within the University.
  • Candidates will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity that supports the Computer Science Department and University mission of integrating diverse perspectives and removing barriers to participation.

  • Qualifications

    Required:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Experience communicating with a variety of technology platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate meaningfully with undergraduates.
  • Strong attention to detail combined with appreciation for the big picture.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and under supervision.
  • Exceptional work ethic.
  • Preferred:

  • Academic advising or comparable higher education experience working directly with undergraduates.
  • Familiarity with national trends and best practices in academic advising profession and higher education.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on- campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
