Description of the Department or Unit

The interior design program is a four-year, professional degree program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design degree. The program combines lecture and studio courses and is a balance of theoretical and pragmatic approaches with an emphasis on hands-on experiences in both labs and studios. Environmental responsibility in design is a focus of the program and is woven holistically throughout the curriculum. The program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

The program has consistently earned top honors in national and international competitions such as the Eaton's SOURCE Award and the PAVE retail competition. Students are required to complete an internship between the third and fourth years, which often leads to full-time employment. Alumni work in all aspects of the interior design industry—primarily in the Southeast and East Coast as well as many other states and several countries. Interior Design at Appalachian State was recently ranked as a DesignIntelligence 2018 “Top 25 Most Admired” program. The report recognized the program among the top ten in the nation in three of the “12 Focus Areas”: Project Planning and Management, Practice Management, and Sustainable Built Environments/ Adaptive Design/Resilient Design.
