The Division of Academic & Student Affairs (DASA) is where students discover connections and community. It is where students live, where they gather, where they improve themselves, each other, and their university. DASA is where students seek guidance and support, both in and outside of the classroom. The division serves all students at NC State through three integrated components: academic affairs, student affairs, and University College.

DASA Reimagined 2022-2028 – a strategic plan to guide our future

Mission – At our core, we promote the success of the whole student. We anticipate and respond to the needs of all NC State students and intentionally co-create an equitable and inclusive campus environment and academic experience that supports students, faculty, and staff in achieving their full potential.

Vision – To unlock opportunity through equitable access to supportive, enriching, and transforming higher education experiences for students, staff, and faculty.

Values – CURIOSITY ~ EMPATHY ~ COLLABORATION ~ EQUITY and ACCESSIBILITY ~ INTEGRITY ~ TRUST

In DASA, we take personal and collective responsibility to use inclusive decision-making to advance and embed equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in everything we do.

NC State was named a great place to work in the 2022 Forbes annual survey as the best large employer in North Carolina. The Division of Academic and Student Affairs is the place to work for faculty and staff who are passionate about promoting the success of the whole student.

The Counseling Center assists NC State students experiencing personal, academic or vocational problems. The goal of the Counseling Center is to provide students with professional counseling services and outreach to help them cope with issues that may impede successful academic performance. The Counseling Center also offers crisis intervention and psychological/psychiatric assessment as well as consultation with others who have concerns about the mental/emotional state of NC State students. Our services are primarily short-term in nature and we make referrals to other helping professionals and community agencies as appropriate.

Essential Job Duties

This position as a Triage Counselor is an integral part of clinical service access to the counseling center. The center is responsible for all mental health services for students at NCSU. The first point of access to services would occur through this clinician. This position would interact with and assess needs of students as well as determine if immediate risk is evident. A major focus of the job duties would be to partner with existing staff members to connect students to needed services either immediately or by appointment. Specific functions would include providing professional assessment, crisis, counseling and outreach services to NC State students as well as consultation to University administrators, staff and others who have concerns about the mental/emotional status of NC State students.

This position acts as a screener for risk and must be knowledgeable in determining appropriate modalities of care such as individual, group, couples counseling and assessment. Strong flexibility and adaptability is needed to manage the demands of when to refer and when to assess as the primary clinician. Team skills will be utilized to collaborate all treatment decisions for students. After hours crisis response, assessment, on-call and coordination is necessary as well as providing prevention and intervention outreach and consultation.

The team approach is used during shared Risk Assessment. As part of a counseling center in-house team, this staff member will evaluate risk level of incoming students, assist in identifying and tracking of at risk students as well as assisting in follow-up consultations, act as a “first responder” to students in crisis and make determinations for referral, level of care and primary modality of treatment.
