The Faculty of Health and Human Services includes the Departments of Child and Youth Care, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Early Childhood Education and Care, Health Care Assistant, Nursing, Practical Nursing, Social Work, School and Community Support Work, and a Professional Development and Training department. The mission of the Faculty is to foster student success and develop and maintain relevant, responsive, and stimulating learning opportunities that are community-based, globally and locally, and offered in a visionary, interprofessional environment that is conducive to learning and promotes health and wellness for all. The Dean and the Dean's office lead, manage, administer and support the instructional, scholarly and outreach activities of the Faculty on four campuses with this mission in mind.

Duties

  • This position requires the preparation and delivery of SOCW 200B: Introduction to Social Welfare Policy on the VIU Nanaimo Campus for students enrolled in the Social Service Diploma program beginning in January of 2022.
  • The facilitation of student learning through the delivery of the curriculum and course learning materials; grading of assignments and tests, and submission of grades; providing communication and feedback to students; management of the supplemental course information and curriculum on the online learning management system; participation in program and faculty meetings; liaising with support staff, program chair and faculty.
  • Successful candidates will be responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles and possess the ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The successful candidate will be attentive to contributions in building a collaborative and effective instructional team.
  • Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.
  • Qualifications

  • PhD in Social Work and/or a Master of Social Work from an accredited university.
  • 2 years of demonstrated proficiency of teaching social work in a post- secondary setting.
  • 5 or more years of relevant social work practice experience.
  • Solid understanding of theories, skills and practice knowledge specific to social work practice and social policy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal ways of knowing and cultural teachings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in team settings.
  • Strong computer competence and technical skills, including experience using online learning management systems.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant PhD(completed, or in progress).
