Primary Purpose of the Position

The University College and Lifelong Learning (UCaLL) is seeking an Instructor, Writing to serve as an academic advisor and teach writing skills to undergraduate students. The instructor will be responsible for serving on departmental and university committees, as well as perform other duties as assigned by the Writing Program Coordinator and/or Director of Writing and Communication Programs.

Department Required Skills

• Master's Degree or higher in English, Composition, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. • One year or more of experience in teaching college level writing and/or reading. • The ability to communicate effectively as a teacher and to operate as an effective member of a team. • The ability to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

• Teaching experience in a higher education setting. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Experience and comfort navigating the needs of various audiences. Advanced technical literacy and computer skills. • Graduate course work in teaching adult education, composition, developmental studies or linguistics. • Experience integrating both reading and writing skills in a meaningful context for precollege-level learners. • Experience working with and teaching students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from diverse backgrounds, abilities and learning styles. • Experience using a variety of technology and tools both in and out of the classroom including Early Warning Systems and LMS (i.e. EAB Navigate, Canvas, etc.)

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency

The candidate would be expected to teach up to a full course load. This would include teaching regular composition courses that address content areas such as analysis, reflection, writing in a variety of genres and forms, and academic conventions. There may be the potential to teach reading courses depending on the need. This position is currently situated in the University College and Lifelong Learning (UCaLL).

The successful candidate should be able to communicate the objectives of each course taught, grade according to those objectives, and report student progress toward those goals. Additionally, the candidate should be able to work effectively with students and staff of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and ages and successfully interact with supervisors, colleagues, and staff as part of an education team. Additional duties included the following: • Establish and maintain opportunities for reasonable out-of-class contact with students. • Prepare course descriptions, outlines, and other material related to courses taught. • Establish and maintain a class roll, and teach in conformance with approved course outlines. • Participate in Student Appraisal of Classroom Learning. • Utilize the standard learning management system (LMS). Currently the LMS is Canvas. • Participate in program assessment efforts as well as placement assessment for incoming first-year students. • In addition to attending all necessary UCaLL associated unit meetings, the candidate is also expected to attend University sponsored faculty meetings.
