Position Title: Instructor, Upward Bound Pre-college Program (Temporary, Part-Time)

Department: Northwest Campus - Upward Bound Pre-college program

Salary or Rate of Pay: C41/1 - $22.91/hour

Position Summary:

Applicants will be considered to be added to an on-call list for short-term instructor opportunities. Applicants may also be considered for longer-term part-time, temporary teaching opportunities if those arise.

This position will develop content and deliver a workshop curriculum that is designed to supplement the classroom skills our high school students receive at their respective sites.

Upward Bound workshops occur one to two Saturdays each month during the school year and four days weekly for six weeks during the summer component of the program.

The Upward Bound workshops are based on the needs of the program and its participants. Instructors will cover subject matter in English, Math, Science, Foreign Language, College, and Career Exploration, Student Study Skills, ACT/SAT test prep, Social Studies, Health/Wellbeing, and Creative Arts. Almost all classes consist of multi-level groups of up to 20 high school students. Although each class is focused on a core subject such as Math or English, Instructors are expected to integrate College and Career Readiness content such as time management, technology, and communication skills to support all students in achieving their short and long-term goals. All instruction is expected to be student-centered and contextualized to ensure the classes are pertinent, engaging, and meaningful for the student attendees.

About Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a U.S. Department of Education grant-funded program administered by the Pima Community College, Northwest Campus. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to high school participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction to students using a variety of blended, hybrid, or online methods; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using both pedagogy and andragogy theory/principles and content knowledge in math, writing, reading, and/or English Language Acquisition.
  • Prepare instructional materials, lesson plans, and classroom presentations in support of students achieving educational goals, in accordance with the program goals and objectives
  • Administer standardized and formative assessments
  • Complete accurate and timely data collection and reporting
  • Facilitate student persistence with individualized support
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning
  • Adjust learning options for individuals with special needs, physical, and/or psychological differences
  • Set up/break down classrooms or other physical activity related specifically to the subject being taught
  • Provide counsel regarding student discipline issues to create positive outcomes
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required
  • In addition, long-term, part-time temporary positions (beyond short-term on- call substitute) will include the following responsibilities and duties:

  • Design and implement high-quality curriculum and instruction for high school to college transitional learners that are flexible, student- centered, standards-based, rigorous, and contextualized.
  • Ability to Integrate student success skills, computer literacy, and civics into their curriculum
  • Assess student needs and goals; determine student placement in the program; evaluate student skills; and, assess student progress for program continuation or completion
  • Facilitate goal-setting activities with students to set and monitor goal achievement
  • Engage in collaborative professional learning and encourage continuing education to promote student achievement
  • Job Requirements:

  • Two years of related experience instructing/tutoring high school or college students in the subject matter to be taught
  • or

  • Candidates who possess similar minimum objective qualifications should describe in detail the education and work experience you regard as establishing the equivalency
  • Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in the subject to be taught or
  • Two or more years of experience teaching the subject in a classroom setting
  • Additional Job Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Childhood and adult learning theory, principles, and methods
  • Non-traditional, student-centered approaches to instruction; maintain cohesive, multi-level diverse groups
  • Strong content knowledge in math, writing, reading, and/or the subject matter that is to be taught
  • Use technology to support classroom instruction and other job-related duties
  • Experience in teaching, various level at-risk and multi-cultural high school populations
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
  • Work in a collaborative environment
  • Understanding general theories of curriculum development
  • Instructional material evaluation and selection techniques in alignment with the student population being served
  • Evaluate student progress through practice testing
  • Strategies to incorporate current issues as a method of instruction
  • College structure, systems, and processes
  • Strategies and tools for career navigation and exploration
  • Ability to collect data and prepare a variety of reports
  • Physical Requirements:

    Positions in this class typically require: talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions and fine finger movements – using the fingers to manipulate/handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, or sorting/separating small parts.

    Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods or moving from one work site to another.
