General Description of Position

Under the direction of the Dean and Associate Dean, the Speech Instructor is responsible for providing instruction in various speech courses in a classroom, online, and/or distance learning environment. Teaching assignments for this position may include but are not limited to Public Speaking, Business and Professional Communication, and Fundamentals of Human Communication. This position is also responsible for obtaining instructional supplies and materials, assisting in the selection of textbooks, advising students and working with the program and college committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provide Instruction to Students Provide instruction using engaged/active learning strategies to a diverse student population. Teaching assignments include, but are not limited to, Public Speaking, Business and Professional Communications, and Fundamentals of Human Communication, and other communications classes as assigned in a classroom, online, and/or distance learning setting. Instruction includes teaching, evaluating, and informing students of their progress. The instructor will utilize a variety of teaching strategies in that are appropriate to individual student needs and may include lecture, small groups, demonstrations, individualized instruction, and use of technology. Instruction may include distance learning and online instruction.

Develop New Courses and Update Existing Courses Work with other speech faculty to develop new courses and update existing courses as required to keep the Speech courses current with new trends. New course development includes writing course objectives, develop syllabi, developing handouts and tests, researching software/technology, and researching textbooks for course use. The updating of existing courses include, keeping current with pedagogy of communications instruction and keeping current with new editions of textbooks and software used.

Maintain a Proper Learning Environment Make certain the classrooms are kept in an orderly manner to present a proper learning environment for all students. This includes reporting facility problems to the supervisor. Responsible for creating and maintaining instruction and instructional materials which are free of gender, cultural and ethnic biases.

Provide for Student Evaluation and Record Keeping Prepare and administer evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress. Participate in and/or provide data for department and general education assessment.

Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Area Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as attending seminars, professional association meetings, conferences, educational workshops, professional development activities, and self-study.

Participate in College and Program Activities and Committees Attend, participate in, and support all department activities and college activities and committees as requested.

Serve as an Academic Advisor for Students Advise Academic Transfer students as required for correct courses, academic standing, student success, etc. following established protocol. Explain college policies and procedures with students, and complete all records and forms necessary for proper student articulation and program operation.

Perform Other College and Program Duties as Assigned Perform other college and program related duties as assigned. These may include, but not be limited to, assisting with development of the department budget and advising supervisor of department needs, promoting the Speech department, supporting student recruitment and assisting in the security of all college and program materials and equipment.

Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors) Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction.

Professional Development Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement. Promote/Support Diversity Promote and support the College's diversity goals; promote/support Access, Fair Employment, EEO, Equity and Diversity programs.

The instructor may have additional duties and responsibilities of supervising and coordinating the activities of the department and its faculty if assigned to be Department Chair. The primary role of the Department Chair is to ensure through personal and faculty efforts that students are able to achieve the objectives of the department. The Department Chair reports to the Associate Dean.

Promote/Support the Organizational Environment through Goal 9 of the Strategic Plan: Promote and support the College's organizational environment goals: 1) Maximize operational efficiency by enhancing policies and procedures, staffing, and communication processes and practices; 2) Maximize a positive and engaging organizational environment by encouraging input, reflective and transparent communication, and compassion and respect toward the views and ideas of others.

Minimum Qualifications

1) Master's Degree in Speech or a Communications discipline with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in speech/oral communication. 2) Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 courses at the secondary or post-secondary level directly related to area of instructional responsibility.

Desired Qualifications

1) Experience with distance education and online teaching. 2) Experience with engaged learning lesson planning/delivery. 3) Experience teaching high school dual-credit courses. 4) Experience teaching at a community college 5) Experience working with adult learners 6) Experience working with diverse populations of students at various levels of language ability, skills, and learning abilities. 7) Experience as an academic advisor.

Salary

$51,500/yr

  • This is a full-time regular position with an implied 40 hour work week. Teaching assignments for this position are scheduled and approved by the College, between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday based the instructional work calendar.
