    Job Description

    Great Basin College (GBC) is seeking a highly qualified individual for a full-time, tenure-track philosophy instructor position at its center in Pahrump, Nevada. The individual hired for this position will be expected to teach a variety of philosophy and humanities courses, including a heavy load of general education courses. Great Basin College has a mission to serve the higher education needs of rural Nevada, and as such, teaching requires extensive use of distance education technology and occasional travel throughout Nevada. Distance delivery of courses will be with interactive video classes to multiple sites, online, and with evolving technologies. This position reports to the Dean, Arts and Sciences. This position is based at GBC's Pahrump Center. The position begins January 2022.

    Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Master's degree in philosophy, humanities, or a closely related field is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. Degree must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

  • A background or experience in philosophy and humanities is mandatory

  • Experience teaching English is desirable

  • Willingness to teach a combination of evening, weekend, interactive video, and online classes is essential. Experience in online and interactive video instruction is preferred

  • Commitment to the college mission is essential

  • A student-centered teaching philosophy that encompasses design, delivery, and assessment

  • An understanding of various levels of preparation and learning styles represented in the typical classroom

  • Responsibilities:

    The successful applicant will be primarily responsible for teaching freshman philosophy and humanities for transfer students. For candidates with an appropriate background, opportunities to teach and develop philosophy and humanities courses may be included. Further responsibilities include:

  • Perform all duties as required of all full-time GBC faculty (full workload of 15 units per semester, advising, committee work, maintain office hours, etc.)

  • Help coordinate and mentor instruction by GBC part-time faculty

  • Participate in the development and teaching of upper-division courses and integrative seminars as necessary

  • Work as a team member with a genuine spirit of cooperation, collaboration, and flexibility in a college setting

  • Continue professional development professionally and pedagogically

  • Advise and recruit students

  • Handle administrative duties related to teaching and program development including strategic planning and assessment

  • Travel by car throughout the GBC service area as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act

  • Participate in the social and cultural development of the college and community

  • Participate in college-wide and other committees as appropriate

  • Other duties as assigned

  • Salary and Benefits:

    Annual salary range is $46,691 - $70,000 commensurate with experience and education.

    Nevada System of Higher Education benefits package includes a 401(a) defined contribution retirement plan with employees contributing 15.50 % and a matching 15.50% from the employer, medical/dental/vision plan, benefit time, 11 paid holidays, and tuition waiver at Nevada System of Higher Education colleges for the employee and family. There is no state income tax in Nevada.
