Job Description:

The Augsburg University Education Department invites applications for a full- time, 9-month, fixed term position beginning August 2022. The Education Department prepares teachers and educators to start and advance their career through offering undergraduate and graduate degree programs in BS completion, Elementary Education, Special Education, Secondary Education, and English as a Second Language; Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and Masters of Arts in Education (MAE), including a licensure-only pathway.

Our goal is to set our teacher candidates on paths to purposeful, reflective, creative, and meaningful careers as ESL educators. Addressing issues such as inequities and racial injustice is a thread that runs through our majors and programs while focusing on critical and effective pedagogies. Candidates with demonstrated commitments to equity and inclusion and effectiveness in serving students from diverse communities are especially encouraged to apply. The Education Department invites candidates to apply that are particularly poised to dismantle the institutionalized forms of bias and racism within the field. We are interested in candidates who understand the role that language plays in identity formation and learning and consider power and privilege in their theories and practices of language use in the classroom. Priority will be given to a candidate demonstrating interest and strength in teaching with an emphasis on intersectionality, translanguaging, and social justice issues in the discipline.

Primary responsibilities include teaching, service, and academic mentoring. Our English as Second Language courses have been offered in a variety of formats: face-to-face, blended, and online. Courses may include Second Language Acquisition, Introduction to Linguistics for Teachers, History and Structure of the English Language, ESL Literacy, ESL Testing and Evaluation, ESL Methods, and Language, Culture, and Schools.

Student advising is expected along with committee assignments within the Department and participation in the larger University community. Maintaining an innovative program of scholarship that complements teaching is not required but recommended for this fixed term position.

The successful candidate for this position will possess an earned doctorate or master's degree in ESL or related field with at least 18 graduate credits of ESL instruction. Doctoral candidates, with a documented plan for completion by August 2022, will be considered. Experience as a licensed K-12 ESL teacher of record for at least three years is required.

  • Peer-reviewed research in the field of English as a Second Language.
