Position Summary

Designs and delivers instruction in first-year writing courses offered by the English program.

Teaching assignment: 3 courses per semester (9 hours): 3 first-year college composition courses, with the possibility of other courses as needed. Expectation of 15 office hours per week for tutoring, workshopping paper drafts, teaching grammar, and/or supplemental instruction labs.

Note: This position requires face-to-face instruction, use of a course management system, and active mentoring of first-year students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares lessons and provides instruction for course work in FTF classes. Daily 75%
  • Adheres to the established classroom, office , and exam schedules. Submits contracts, book requests, syllabi, grades, evaluations, and other required paperwork and reports by due dates. Daily 20%
  • Participates in meetings with writing program within the Department of Languages & Literature to assess and improve student engagement and instructional delivery. Monthly 5%
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean and program administrators.
  • Participates in program and departmental assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Education, Certifications and/or Licenses

  • Candidates are expected to have either an earned doctorate or master's degree in English (preferably with graduate hours in rhetoric and composition).
  • Experience

  • Experience in college-level teaching using active learning techniques and best practices.
  • Experience in assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Evidence of excellence in and commitment to teaching general education English courses.
  • Interest in working with unprepared, underserved, and first-year student populations through active mentoring.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of English.
  • Thorough understanding of approaches to teaching first-year college composition.
  • Familiarity with best practices in instruction and intentional mentoring of underprepared and underserved student populations.
  • Familiarity with assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Familiarity with effective use of online course management systems (i.e., Blackboard or Canvas).
  • Familiarity with academic policies and procedures of higher education institutions.
  • Ability to develop and deliver courses in first-year writing.
  • Ability to adhere to University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues.
  • Ability to be discreet in handling confidential matters, while complying with FERPA regulations.
  • Ability to comply with rules, standards, regulations and laws related to student records.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to demonstrate and provide excellent service to both the University and the community.
