The Department of Chemistry, Physics and Atmospheric invites applications for a full-time Instructor of Physics on August 1, 2023.

The successful candidate will serve as a CPAS teaching faculty member in freshman and sophomore level Chemistry courses, including General Chemistry, Introduction to Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry I & II. Other responsibilities include participating in course-related, faculty-led drill sessions; guiding and mentoring underprepared students toward JSU resources that can support courses success; and assisting departmental Chemistry program recruitment efforts by participating in local school and community outreach events.

A Ph.D. in Chemistry is required, and strong candidates will also contribute a commitment to inclusive, evidence-based STEM teaching, learning and assessment approaches, a record of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, and a willingness to collaborate with other program faculty in guiding and mentoring students. We welcome applications from women and underrepresented minority candidates.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education

Must have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Biochemistry, with the degree in hand by start date

Minimum Required Experience

Must have evidence of outstanding teaching ability.

  • Academic experience working on a university campus with a culturally diverse student and faculty population
  • Proven commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and willingness to contribute to the College's strategic plan of inclusion
  • Demonstrated success mentoring students of color
  • Successful teaching experience in higher education including the use of inclusive, active-learning-based pedagogics
  • Skills and Abilities

    Must demonstrate commitment to inclusive pedagogy and teaching excellence

    Must have effective oral and written communication skills Must be able to teach Organic Chemistry courses

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to applying expertise in Chemistry and STEM Education services to students through:

  • Preparing course plans and materials
  • Monitoring attendance
  • Delivering courses and labs
  • Leading course-related drill session
  • Monitoring student progress
  • Communicating progress and/or concerns with stu
  • Mentoring students
  • Advising students
  • Recording grades and submitting reports
