Director of First-Year Writing and Instructor, Non-Tenure Track

The English department at Suffolk University is pleased to announce a career opportunity as a full-time non-tenure-track instructor of first-year composition and director of the first-year writing program beginning January 1, 2022!

The director will administer the day-to-day activity of an established writing program, which runs over 100 sections annually with a WAC focus, will provide leadership and support for curriculum development, will serve on college and departmental committees, and will provide expertise in composition pedagogy to faculty and students across disciplines. Experience with assessment and teaching composition to international students is a plus. The teaching load is 3/2 in composition with opportunities to teach in other areas of Suffolk's core curriculum. There will also be service expectations commensurate with the successful candidate's full-time status that will be determined in consultation with the English chair. Teaching responsibilities include teaching two or three courses per semester in the first-year writing program (WRI 101, 102, and/or H103). Service responsibilities include organizing symposia geared toward composition pedagogy, overseeing placement in writing courses, assessing the program, and working with the chair of the English department to maintain quality throughout the program.

Our preference is for a candidate with a Ph.D. in rhetoric/composition studies or significant progress toward that degree with demonstrated college/university teaching excellence and experience directing a writing program or writing center. The English department has just launched a new concentration in public and professional writing that may benefit from the expertise of the successful candidate. The program has a strong commitment to student development by providing high-quality instruction to a diverse student body.
