The UNT Chemistry Department serves this diverse population of students through both undergraduate degrees (B.S., B.A.) and advanced degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.). Over 4000 undergraduates enroll in our large General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry lab and lecture courses each year. Our graduate program, currently with over 100 students, is focused on training the next generation of scientists in research. Our research-active faculty members pursue research in diverse areas ranging from materials chemistry to medicinal chemistry, with 80% of them receiving external financial support for their research through grants and contracts. Position Overview

To supervise and maintain the physical facilities and the instrumentation in the General Chemistry and other assigned instructional laboratories in the Department of Chemistry. Will also provide instructional training use of laboratory equipment for graduate student teaching assistants assigned to General Chemistry instructional laboratories

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in related field and two years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Working knowledge of equipment and instrumentation appropriate to the nature of the lab and/or the discipline, and of supplies including operation, set-up, storage, and maintenance. • Working knowledge of instructional applications related to the laboratory and/or the discipline. • Ability to make effective presentations of experiments or software, and provide instruction in laboratory techniques, use of equipment, use of software, procedures, and safety rules. • Ability to supervise work performed by others.

  • Required License / Registration / Certification Work Schedule

    A 5-day work schedule during normal business hours is typical. After hours activities may occasionally be needed to respond to needs of evening and weekend lab classes.

    Job Duties

    o

    Prepare and maintain the instrumentation used by students in the General Chemistry instructional laboratories

    o

    Monitor proper function of equipment/carry out standard performance checks in laboratories

    o

    Provide oversight and assistance to students using the equipment

    o

    Coordinate routine maintenance and repair of the instrument with Department Chair and Lead Lab Supervisor

    o

    Coordinate and supervise student preppers to assure all equipment and chemicals are available and ready for use when needed for scheduled experiments in the undergraduate instructional laboratories

    o

    Coordinate disposal of waste chemicals with personnel from Risk Management

    o

    Monitor undergraduate laboratories and prep rooms for safety hazards and correct as needed

    o

    Coordinate ordering of laboratory materials and supplies based on experiments scheduled by faculty

    o

    Advise the Lead Lab Supervisor and Department Chair of financial resources needed from course fees to operate the General Chemistry labs

    o

    Prepping of instructional laboratories as needed by the department

    o

    Other duties as assigned by supervisor
