Job Summary

The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching invites applications for an instructional consultant to join CRLT's Foundational Course Initiative (FCI), which is funded through the Provost's Office. FCI's mission is to create an equitable and engaging 21st century model of teaching at scale by redesigning large-enrollment undergraduate courses that introduce students to a discipline. FCI consultants accomplish this work by leading collaborative course design (CCD) teams--comprised of instructors, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students--through a three-year redesign process driven by team goals, course-specific data, and educational design research. In particular, FCI supports course redesign in four key areas: student support and classroom climate, pedagogy and design, assessment and analytics, and instructional technology.

This is an opportunity to join the nation's first teaching center and to work with a diverse and dynamic team dedicated to transforming large foundational courses and promoting excellence in teaching by centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

Starting date: As soon as possible. Please note this is a three-year limited- term position, with strong possibility for renewal.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work with FCI colleagues to lead, coordinate, and contribute to the long-term redesign efforts of multiple large enrollment courses. In addition to the requirements, skills, and responsibilities outlined here, the successful candidate will demonstrate creative problem- solving skills, adaptability, and they will have experience managing multiple complex projects. They will also have strong interpersonal, strategic planning, and organizational skills. Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Instructional Design and Evaluation
  • Lead and contribute to all phases of the course design process, including vision, material creation, project implementation, and assessment of impact
  • Examine course context to develop holistic approaches to center equity in course curriculum, structure, and instructional practices
  • Make decisions about course design using multiple forms of evidence, including original data from the course, key stakeholder perspectives, and relevant scholarship
  • Collect and analyze qualitative data (e.g. from focus groups or classroom observations) and communicate complex information to teams in effective ways
  • Team Collaboration and Project Management
  • Lead regular working sessions with course teams throughout their three-year partnership
  • Work with course teams and other FCI consultants to develop both short-term redesign projects and long-term transformation strategies
  • Build effective relationships within course teams, integrate diverse perspectives, and foster a transparent and proactive flow of information to ensure effective collaboration
  • Work with fellow FCI consultants to help build communities of practice within teams that are centered on equity-focused teaching
  • Program Building and FCI Development
  • Collaborate with FCI Director and consultants to continue refining and enhancing FCI's scope and mission
  • Participate in FCI and CRLT working groups and team conversations to support initiative-wide and center-wide programming and strategic planning
  • Required Qualifications
  • Completed doctorate or equivalent job experience, such as MA plus at least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Experience designing and/or teaching at university, college, or K-12 levels
  • Ability to lead effective team collaboration (as demonstrated through, for example, successful leadership of previous teams, committee work, or substantive projects)
  • A commitment to furthering equity and inclusion (candidates are invited to share how they have cultivated this commitment in different realms of their past experience)
  • Experience designing and conducting qualitative data collection, such as focus groups, observations, and interviews, and analyzing and presenting resulting data
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Experience teaching and/or designing large courses
  • Experience consulting, especially with instructors about teaching or course design related to online, hybrid, or in-person courses
  • Knowledge of the field of educational design and the scholarship of teaching and learning
