The NC State College of Education leads the way in North Carolina in preparing professionals, conducting research, and engaging communities to improve educational outcomes for all learners across the state and beyond. During the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the faculty had half of their proposals funded and brought in over $30 million in new funded research. They address society's most pressing educational challenges and convert their research to action and innovative solutions that transform teaching and learning environments across the lifespan, with particular strengths in improving technology-enhanced learning and teaching in STEM education and literacy; anti-racism education, increasing diversity, equity and access in education; and innovating leadership development.

The entire college is engaged in a transformative process to become an anti- racist organization. It is composed of three academic departments: Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education; and Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, with approximately 130 faculty members and 90 support and professional staff. The college's 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students study across 50-plus degree programs that deliver highly-engaged and personalized academic experiences that prepare them to lead in the field of education. The college is also home to the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation and the proposed Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research.

The North Carolina New Teacher Support Program (NC NTSP) is a comprehensive, university-based induction program. The goal of NC NTSP is to support student achievement by increasing teacher retention and supporting growth in teacher effectiveness. In pursuit of this goal, we provide three core services: individual instructional coaching; workshop style or small group professional development sessions, and a conference-style professional development institute.

Essential Job Duties

The NC NTSP is seeking Instructional Coaches who will serve new teachers in a number of schools and districts in the central and northeastern regions of North Carolina. The instructional coach will guide and support teacher professional learning and growth through intentional, face-to-face, virtual, or hybrid coaching interactions.

Essential duties include:

  • Observe classroom practice and gather data
  • Assess strengths/weaknesses and use observation/data to individualize coaching interactions
  • Engage new teachers in reflective practice; i.e. use data to reflect on student achievement
  • Have crucial conversations with teachers about maintaining high expectations for students
  • Provide a variety of resources to help teachers improve their practice and student achievement (modeling, co-teaching, providing human/other resources, etc.)
  • Collaborate with new teachers on addressing school-based challenges; advocate for or encourage self-advocacy
  • Build/support positive culture within network of teachers in their region
  • Implement structures to facilitate networking among new teachers
  • Develop knowledge of regional and Local Education Agency (LEA) resources along with the University School Partnerships
  • Collaborate with school and LEA personnel as needed (school based mentors, administrators and district leaders)
  • Design and facilitate large and small group professional development sessions
  • Connect with other coaches; participate in professional development to improve practice
  • Maintain accurate records of coaching service
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Minimum Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree or higher
  • Current North Carolina State teaching license
  • Minimum of 5 years experience teaching
  • Strong record of teacher leadership (mentor, instructional coach, professional learning facilitator)

  • Record of successful experience with diverse students in low-performing schools
  • Experience with North Carolina curricula at a variety of grade levels and subject areas
  • Background or experience in Special Education
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s)

  • Current North Carolina teaching license required.
  • Licenses must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • A valid North Carolina driver's license or appropriate transportation to ensure that you may perform all requirements of the position is required.
